Alphas TW to get a deeper spool?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Alphas TW to get a deeper spool?

Post by LowRange » Thu Jun 11, 2020 6:36 am

I looks like this new Alphas was designed around a larger diameter spool than what is seen in the Alphas TW Air. I hope they release a 34mm 1016 version.

I think Alphas spool sizes are or has been:

Standard Alphas: 33 mm
2016 Daiwa Alphas Air: 32 mm
ct sv Alphas 700: 30 mm
2020 Alphas Air: 28 mm

I'm not sure is there really space to make 34 mm version of Alphas frame...

And if it would be tw version, then it most probably would not be made in Japan, and therefore Daiwa puristist wouldn't be anyway interested to buy...But what I have read, puristist might love 34 mm Alphas, Made in Japan. Maybe without tw. Bright clours :D

This new Alphas appears to be a new design from scratch. Whatever limitations of the old platform do not apply. They could make it 33 mm out of nostalgia. I wouldn't mind this if it meant my old Alphas can use the new gen Alphas spools. On the other had if I buy the new gen Alphas I would want 34 mm spools to make use of my arsenal of 34mm 103 and 1016 spools.

True. It's possible that there could be room for 34 mm. 34 mm new Alphas would be fine. Still I don't have arsenal of those spools, only 7 pieces, and that's not much.

EDIT:
I made measurements from screenshot for Youtube. It seems that there's not enough space for 34 mm spool (in diameter direction) in new Alphas Air tw frame...:

And I guess it will be issue also in Width direction.

But now I hope they make tw version of ct 700 Alphas, because I have spools to it :D

Btv, 'cheap' spools for Alphas Air in Ebay. Spool $332.09, shipping $30, and if I would order, tax is 24% and import duty is something 3%. Total price for spool would be only $459.
It's such inexpensive because in Finland Import Duty's are only for product (not for shipping).

But it is of course fine piece of engineering, and that is priceless :D

I don't understand why these japanese sellers list items at such a huge mark up. There has to be a reason I'm missing or why would they do it? No one would buy that.

There seems to be a trend in the last year or so of these insane prices. Not too long ago I saw a used T3 MX list for over $600!!!

It wasn't cheap to order directly Karil (30 mm spool for ct Alphas). There was added japan taxes and shipping costs, and when spool arrived, I paid finnish taxes for spool+japan taxes+shipping and Import duty for spool+japan taxes. I know that I might try to get those Japan taxes back, but it seemed not so easy. Karil's spools are expensive... But yes, I think it's still cheaper from directly Karil's than from Ebay. But from Ebay it's easier.

Basicly all KTF spools in Ebay are very high priced. Only for Abu can be found cheap ones and for Shimano those are not as expensive as for Daiwas. Well, I think, someone is buying. If not, pricing should go more to reasonable:

I have seen on Ebay reels for sale for something $2000, and for reel which can be bought for some $150. I have thought should I report those listings for Ebay, that there's something odd.

Good detective work =D>

I wonder what the default spool diameter will be for this platform? 30mm?

It will probably be 30 mm but it would be cool if it was 31 like the Pixy. That would encourage more 31 mm spool development and would allow oldies like the Airy Red magforce V spool to be used in the new reel. This is wishful thinking of course.

Yes, small diameter centrifugal controlled (Mag-Z & Mag-V) spools for this new platform would be welcomed also in my opinion! And taking old 31 mm spool it could be done. Also they could make Mag-3D sideplates, if they really insist :D Btv, it would be fun if Ray's (or somebody else) would start to sell Mag-3D conversions on Ali. :D

Hard to guess which it will be - or will it be anyway

But because it seems build with spacers, strong guess is that bigger spool version will be available. Maybe original Alphas 33 mm might be possible, but probably it is 30 mm, 31 mm or 32 mm.

If they come out with a non finesse version of the Alphas TW, I don't think not being made in Japan will stop me from buying it.

Same here. The only reason I haven't jumped on the CT SV is the lower gear ratio. If they come out with something in the 8-9:1 ratio that brings in 30+ IPT then I will have to jump on it.

Ditto.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I just want it to be 33mm to expand the number of 33mm spools for my Alphas collection.

I'm also gonna need you to sell me some more Alphas to expand my collection.
