Shimano reel names
Re: Shimano reel names
As bad as "Vanford" might be how many times has you heard someone refer to the CI 4 as the C 14. So I am alright with the name change even tho I think it is a dumb name.
I know this is about Shimano names so I won't mention another brand whose reel are all a bunch of numbers and letters with somewhere in the name the term 'Speed Spool'.

Once upon a time, "Riley" was a goofy name too.

Re: Shimano reel names
I wish they'd do away with the F generation names for the Vanford. Shimano Vanford the Third would sound great in 2027.

Re: Shimano reel names
I don't mind the names but Vanford is my least favorite.
I do love Stella, Vanquish, Exsence, Metanium, Antares...

Re: Shimano reel names
Well, apparently nobody likes the name Vanford.
What should shimano have named this new reel?

Re: Shimano reel names
Isn't that why companies employ test groups for their products before releasing, to make sure their products don't bomb?
Re: Shimano reel names
Perhaps it’s the af”ford”able version of the vanquish.. hence vanford?

Re: Shimano reel names
Maybe they figured the fishing crowd would be very polarized about such a "classy" or "snooty" name and thought it'd be a good marketing opportunity. Based on the forum threads I've seen here and elsewhere I'd say it was a smart decision!
Re: Shimano reel names
The name does have everyone talking.
Love it or hate it, everyone is still talking about it.
Isn't that the best form of advertising?

Re: Shimano reel names
Literally this is the worst name ever assigned to a shimano reel. I seriously doubt I’ll buy one. Mainly because I have the fl stradics and don’t need one. But honestly I think I would actually pass on this reel because of the name.
Guy in other boat: “Hey, what ya fishing with over there?”
Me: A vanford....
How embarrassing

Re: Shimano reel names
I know, and I hate to be that guy! Usually I'm shaking my head while reading posts on this site by the tackle nerds. I just want a reel that works. I might even buy a vanford. But man, just a terrible terrible, dorky worthless name.JBcrankaddict wrote: ↑Sun Jul 12, 2020 8:47 amI knew there were picky people on here, but wow. Won’t buy a reel because of the name??? Seriously? While I agree that Vanford is a weird name, definitely wouldn’t keep me from buying a reel. Even a name as bad as Tatulion

Re: Shimano reel names
I knew Aldabaran and Antares were astronomical bodies but then I googled Metanium, agreed changing from Stradic to Vanford is big mistake, Vanford sounds like a brand of comfortable slippers. Daiwa’s Tatula variants are out of control, I don’t know who has taken over these companies in the last 5 to 10 years but they need to move on! Tatulas new and exciting got old and boring real quick due to overuse of the brand I reckon.
