Daiwa SV103 > Type R+ spring -vs- HLC spring?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Daiwa SV103 > Type R+ spring -vs- HLC spring?

Post by aqua71 » Thu Jul 23, 2020 9:23 am

I’m interested in replacing the spring on my SV103 to help loosen it up and add some more distance. I use the reel for spinner baits, chatter baits, square bills, etc., in the 3/8 oz to 3/4 oz range.

With that being said, is there a difference between the Type R+ spring and HLC spring? If so, which option would be best for my application and where can I source it? Thanks in advance.

The HLC spring is stiffer than the R+. You can find it here: https://japantackle.com/tu001003.html

I had an SV103 spool with an R+ spring installed and about 1/16 of an inch material removed from the rotor and it was still relatively tame. I'd go with that over the R+ spring

In hard cast with heavy and aerodynamic lure difference of feel is significant. Difference in casting distance is there but it's not as significant as it feels. First lure with I missed stronger HLC spring was this 27 g seatrout lure:

In my opinion with spinnerbaits there is not advantage of stiffer spring but disadvantage is.

HLC spring pull's inductor back at in speed of twice than standard spring, and therefore difference in braking profile is significant. And in slow cast, then inductor doesn't necessary extend at all.

But try, spring is cheap.. When I orederd, I ordered all springs which was in stock in that time. All springs are still installed and in the use.

I appreciate the advice. I'll likely go with the HLC spring. Thanks again.

Mainly 'open feel' of Mag-Z with HLC spring is very nice when it performs trouble free. And with heavy or semi heavy lures with not too much drag it really performs trouble free. I have HLC springs in Z2020 (where it was in standard) and in OG HLC Zillion (where it was as well at standard), in I'ze HLC Spool (where it surprisingly wasn't in standard when I got spool) and in Steez 103 type R+ spool (another one this spool is standard) and also in standard ct Alphas 70 spool (which is currently with Ray's inductor.)

All these spools behave basically as 'normal' spool in except of OG HLC (which needs something else but not standard lures: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA5bRF_K0Oo&t=24s )
But in light use or challenging conditions I have some times wished I should take standard Steez spool with me.
