Daiwa zillion

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

I hope so. I want one but don't want to pay Morethan money for a super Tatula.

Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I want blow out prices on these and I want them now. I need a higher capacity reel for 1 oz baits, flutter spoons and the like for my Hyuga 72H. Already spooling a TD Zilion HLC and 1016 spools with the rod of 50# and 6# braid with just under an ounce. Need that capacity but I'm not spending $400 for one. Not $350 for one when the Morethan is $365 on Ebay and it's a friggin Steez. Aluminum frame and side plate bronze gear 8.6:1 Betterthan Steez. Reality check time Zillion TW HD. You're an awesome version of the old Tatula from 2014. You should be $200.

I use mine for the Storm Arashi, no problems so far.

The Arashi is 3.5 oz. I think for 5 oz. you would be better served with a larger reel, Tranx, Lexa, etc.

It's a matter of line capacity. Typically, larger, heavier lures are fished on 20 - 30 lb nylon monofilament. Some people choose fluoro. Either way, those lines are thick in diameter so you need a larger capacity reel to hold enough line to make your cast. You don't want to spool your reel on every cast. That's just inviting disaster. You can mitigate this a bit by using braid as your main line and then connecting a leader of heavy mono or flouro - or if the fish are not line shy where you're fishing, just go with straight braid. It's just a matter of how much line you can get on the reel to serve the purpose at hand.

I throw big baits up to 4 or 5 ounces on 100 - 200 size reels, but only if I'm going with a braid and mono leader. If I'm going straight mono, I'm using my Daiwa/Deps DR-Z2020XHL, Ryoga 1520L, Abu Garcia Revo4 Beast, Abu Garcia Revo4 Beast Rocket, Pluton, Shrapnel, etc.. Although right now, my DR-Z2020XHL and Ryoga 1520L are spooled with hollow braid and a topshot of mono and my Revo4 Beast and Beast Rockets are spooled with straight braid.

So snagged one of these reels on an ALF sale. I like it a lot for steelhead and small salmon baits. I have tinkered with it to see how it responds with a few different spools, including the 1520 Ryoga Magforce Z spool, to which for inline spinners and mono, like the stock fixed inductor spool best (I think the Ryoga spool will be better for spoons...). I measured out my casts and tuning the brakes to the no. 5 spinners I intend to use primarily, I can consistently achieve 147’ casts (some wind, too) with 12lb Sufix Advance on a 9’ SC LE steelhead rod (MH 8-17lb). The spinner is 1/2oz built and even has a silicone bass skirt that catches even more wind than a traditional torpedo body spinner.

It’s super smooth, way smoother than my basic tats, smoother than my Elite Longcast, too. I’d buy loads of ‘me at $200, too, but I think they really are a better reel than that. I plan to own more, but not at MSRP, either... I do think they are a bit of a niche reel.

That casting distance sounds poor. The last time I tested my old Tatula Type R with the Ray's Long Cast spool I was getting 148ft with a 72M Zodias and a 3/8 oz mini mop jig with no trailer. Line was a 12 or 16 # fluorocarbon. I considered that distance good but not bindblowing. The stock fixed inductor sounds like it would be better lobbing big baits.
