Is there a JDM counterpart to the Shimano Vanford?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Not to be discussed. I’m also awaiting 500/1000/2000 size to be available. Most of the old 1000/2000 size are 12mm spool length 2500 is 14.5mm, while Vanford have 13.5 and 17mm accordingly. From paper it seems to be long stroke spool alright. I’m kind of very disappointed that 500 is not a long stroke spool, but I can’t find any detail of 500 on japan website.
Ah....I see. That is helpful. If I remember correctly, my old Daiwas from 2007 in size 1003 are about 15mm stroke so I thought long stroke from shimano would exceed that.

I've never had a high end shimano to compare but I load my Daiwa almost to the edge of the lip and generally have no line control issues. The line just go straight out without hardly having a lip to touch so I always thought that should cast further than the current Shimano's long angled lip that is unavoidable. I'm not sure if I am right of course....

There is no Vanford 500 for Japan. Japan's line up is more limited than the US but they do have shallow spool..
You are right, shimano long stroke spool is not long after all when compare with Daiwa at least in 1000/2000 size. I finally got the shipment for Vanford 2000S. Compare with my Kage LT 2000, Vanford spool is a bit shorter. The casting performance is good, that advertised spool lip really help in casting.

Just_Bass, now THIS is a super helpful post given that you have the photos. It looks like Daiwa 2000 also has larger diameter than the Shimano 2000 in terms of how far you can fill the line up to in the spool. What I've thought is that in actual spool diameter when measure by where you fill the line up to, the Daiwa 1000 is about the same as the Shimano 2000. And Shimano finally caught up with Daiwa's stroke length. This is not a criticism of Shimano - simply trying to figure things out.

Question for you - do you find any difference in casting distance between the Daiwa and Shimano, everything else being equal? I am not convinced that the wider angled lip of the Shimano aids distance but I could be wrong.

Thanks again for a very helpful post.

The Vanford spool is bigger than Daiwa 2000 spool 43mm VS 42mm, how far can the line fill up to is about the same on both 2000. The Daiwa 1000 LT series is definitely smaller 40mm. I have Tatula 1000 but sold it. This is comparison only 2000 size but true 2500 might have taller spool.
The big question is, do I feel different in casting distance?
First of all I was in hurry and mess up when filling the spool of Vanford so I didn’t get to the full level. The one best to compare is my Exceler LT 2000 which filled with the same line 4# Nanofil. At this point Vanford have less line but the casting distance is on par or a little better. I used same rod and lure (1/16oz roadrunner marabou on Majorcraft Crostage 7’3 Mebaru) I used this setup the day before with Exceler LT.

Just_Bass,

THANKS. Ahh....going by the picture, the Daiwa spool lip is different from mine. I'm still on old Daiwa Luvias and the Fuego TD 1000As. Those do not have a 45 degree lip at all.

Thanks for your helpful insights. A picture is worth a 1000 words indeed.
