Love me some Daiwa... but I agree and have thought that they were moving into a lackluster design era when I saw the knobs that started coming on the higher end reels a on the higher end Daiwas. The regurgitation of the Tatula as well as the copycat Lew's knobs. I regret selling all my old stuff off

Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
That's a good guess because the palm side plate on the JDM model is not aluminum.
The US version is made at a Daiwa owned and operated facility in Thailand - edited for accuracy!
I've been in communication with the reel engineers at Daiwa and the brass gear set is the primary weight difference between the two models. I also agree with you, if I can get brass gears, I want brass gears regardless the weight increase.DenhamBruce wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 4:40 pmI personally could care less if brass adds a little bit of weight when in general it feels smoother and lasts longer. And if you picked up 2 identical reels side by side that both had gears of each type I doubt you could tell which was which from weight in the hand.

Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Zillion HD is made at a Daiwa owned and operated facility in Thailand. The first Zillion SV TW was also made there. I've fished these reels extensively and they have performed great and still do. There are plenty of examples of quality reels coming from Daiwa that aren't made in Japan. I've been to Daiwa HQ in Japan and sure, I wish everything was made there, but that's just not economically feasible, nor would they be able to produce quality reels at prices that are competitive. I'm not going to dismiss a reel because of it's origin before actually using and fishing it either though. I've been very happy with the performance of many of the Tatula variants, none of which are made in Japan. Daiwa isn't going to allow the manufacture location of Zillion to detract from its quality or performance. Fortunately there are a lot of options out there!

I am still surprised they are making 2 different versions for US/Japan... Hard choice if this is confirmed, I really like the Aluminum gears in my Steez A but passing on brass gears is tough.

They are making two different versions for the US and Japan. I'm not sure what more confirmation is necessary as the information has been made public.

Thanks.bronzefly wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 2:41 pmWe haven't had one apart yet, but I'd imagine they are built the same as the other higher end reels with free floating spools...mark poulson wrote: ↑Mon Jan 18, 2021 9:02 amHow many bearing are on the spool shaft, from non-handle side plate to tension control knob?
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Well, I went for the JDM version even before I knew there was an USDM one on route and I'm good with that, arrived today, feels great, easy to palm.
It's lighter and Daiwa seems to know how to do long lasting aluminum gears and to me made in Japan still feels a bit reasuring.

Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Will this reel be saltwater friendly despite the lack of crbb's or is it going to be more of a freshwater only reel like the zillion 10? I'm highly tempted to get one but want to make sure I'll be ok using it in saltwater before ordering.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
I contacted Daiwa. Was told they're made in Thailand, not Malaysia (the USDM ones that is)
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
What exactly is the finish on the reel? In some photos it looks chromed, but in others it looks like brushed aluminum with a clear coat.

First off, welcome to the forum. To answer your question, it is a slick silver-painted finish, likely with a clearcoat.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Correct - The new US Zillion SV TW G is made in the Daiwa Thailand facility where the other Zillions have been made of late. I stand by my mistake in disseminating that information improperly. I apologize to the TT community for the oversight.

No need to apologize, but yea, its what i figured. Don't think i've seen any Daiwas made in Malaysia. Its Shimano that has their factories there as far as i am aware.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Got that now, I was a bit behind, I see where 175g for the JDM version doesn't convert to the 6.7oz US weight. You think both models will be viable? Thailand made has never bothered me...
