That's a shame about the soft frame, think that officially rules it out for me as I'm usually not that gentle on my gear when in my kayak. Do both the USDM and JDM versions suffer from that?CFDoc wrote: ↑Sat Mar 27, 2021 10:00 amThat SLP doesn’t even really look like the regular zillion at all. The dial adjustment is back to being top facing instead of bottom facing.
I learned a tough lesson yesterday I figured y’all would want to be aware of.
The frame on these zillions is a bit on the soft side and scratches fairly easy. I found this out yesterday fishing pretty much all day. During one of my boat rides, one of my zillions got turned sideways and the frame was against another reel for the ride. It’s now got some pretty deep gouges in it. Running my fingernail along the scratches you can feel the softness in the frame.
So be careful if you’re trying to keep these reels looking new.

I was surprised to be honest. The Metanium it was rubbing against showed zero scratches of any sort.
Both Aluminum and Magnesium are generally soft metals in pure form, but all bets are off once you start talking about alloys. It looks like Shimano did a very good job picking a magnesium alloy for the 2020 Met while the 2021 zillion seems to be on the soft side.
For my next experiment, I may just brinell hardness test these two reels, lol.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
This will suck as I bought 2 and sold some legends to get them. Actually plan to fish these Zillions.

Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Were the scratches on the top/hood of the reel? To me it feels like that piece is some sort of graphite because that part is warm and doesn't feel like metal when I grip the reel which could explain why it gouges easily?
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
If true then they really did pull a Shimano. That's how the Curado k is constructed.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
From Daiwa USA site. Can anyone confirm line capacity on this 1000 size zillion. Daiwa is pretty weird from 100. 103 105 now we have 70/700, 800 and 1000.

Good point. I’ll try to look closer this afternoon. Here’s a pic though of what it looks like now. My guess is the top of the zillion was squished against the palm side of the Met where ridges and protrusions were scratching the top surface.
It was a good 10 plus minute boat run when it happened.

That’s pretty rough for a 10 minute boat ride. That’s why I alway use a reel cover.CFDoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 8:36 am

I always use reel covers too when the rods/reels are riding in the rod locker.
This happened while riding on the deck underneath rod straps. I’m still torn between whether I just got unlucky the way the reel ended up while riding or if this frame is just soft.
I can honestly say in 25+ years of riding in boats with the rods/reel on deck, this has never happened to me before.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Let's hope that if that is a plastic top peice that it can be ordered separately from a new frame unlike the Curado K which requires a new frame with included plastic coverCFDoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 8:36 am

I’m trying to think about a time when I’ve seen something like that.CFDoc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 9:41 amJohnny A wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 9:06 am

Almost looks like marks from the bend of a treble hook.

That makes more sense to me. Another reel would have to have jagged features to have done that damage.Winstondry wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 10:54 amAlmost looks like marks from the bend of a treble hook.

I didn't have any treble hooks on anything.Winstondry wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 10:54 amAlmost looks like marks from the bend of a treble hook.
But I did have a wacky worm on the rod next to it with the hook being held by a Fuji hook keeper.
I guess it's possible that hook found its way onto the zillion.
Re: Zillion sv TW 1000
Let's hope this was truly a fluke. Sucks for OP be nice if that part could be replaced.
