Main gear and pinion of zillion 1000 and steez A. 7:1

Have you tried the zillion gears inside the steez A or steez sv tw? I was thinking/hoping to get one of these gears for my steez tw
no, i didn't swap them. just compared. They're the same gearing material and cut so you aren't going to notice a difference. very smooth reel. The main gear I believe is identical and the only difference in the pinion is it's a touch longer. The total weight of my reel was as advertised, 175g on the nuts...or 6.1oz. Very impressed /w this reel.
6.1oz is impressive indeed. Is the palming side plate made out of aluminum?
i believe so. the descrip says it's made of aluminum. feels that way, too. I'm the duralumin gears have held up very well for the 4-5 years i've used them in a handful of steez sv and As. i've had to replace one set for user error but they're super durable. My zillion was 318$ from JPAngler. Their stock seems to come and go quick /w how fast their shipping is and how low their prices are.

That's great. I really do hope this reel does very well for Daiwa so they get off that awful Tatula rehashing they've been on for seven years and create more well built Made in Japan reels that don't cost $600+.

The Tacklewarehouse description say, "The HyperDrive Design also features a double support system on both sides of the pinion gear to prevent any loss of power or smoothness when under heavy loads." How many bearing are on the spool shaft, from non-handle side plate to tension control knob?

Hasn't diawa used their dura aluminum gears successfully for years in alot of their higher end reels including steez? The reason I ask is that I'm puzzled as to why they would go brass for the usdm market if the result of doing so meant adding a half ounce of weight. Is it purely because the American market thinks brass equals durability?

yes, the jdm zillion gears are the same cut and material (duralumin) as used in the steez SVTW, steez ATW and morethan 7x PETW. I've had to replace one of my own gear sets of the 5 variants I have in 4-5 years for user error.

I'm not sure why they used brass over the duralumin but it's nice to have both options for things like Frogging/punching.

Not sure if you have had your hands on both but out of curiosity, are the USDM and JDM spools different? The JDM lists at 14/90 and 16/80 and the USDM lists at 14/100 and 16/85.

Kinda seems like Daiwa is going the way of Shimano for me where I actually much prefer the JDM offering over the USDM counterpart.

I bought two USDM Met B’s and three JDM Met B’s and ended up having to spend $100 on JDM spools because I was extremely disappointed in the performance of the USDM spools compared to JDM. Likewise for this new zillion (which I will purchase), if there’s a spool difference and I can make the reel more salt friendly with aluminum, I’m going to prefer a JDM model.

As much as I’d like to support US sellers, it sucks when Japan gets the better reel for my purposes.

It is my present understanding that the spools are the same.

Daiwa has had great success with their duralumin gears indeed. I have several Steez A and SV TW that have a lot of miles on the original gears and they still feel incredible, no buzz or anything of the sort. The Tackle Trap is a Daiwa warranty center and it is extremely infrequent to see any gear failures due to the material. My personal preference is for brass gears however and I'm glad to see the US version offer these and am excited to put some miles on the new cut they are using on these gears. They are cut to have more points of contact at all times which should prove to be a good thing overall.

A 1/2 oz of weight is pretty insignificant in general when we are talking about a work horse type reel, but that's just my opinion. I do know that some folks are going to have their reasons to prefer the Japan model however, weight alone will sway some I'm sure.

We haven't had one apart yet, but I'd imagine they are built the same as the other higher end reels with free floating spools...

USDM version says aluminum handle side plate. JDM version says both side plates are aluminum. What's going on here?

I personally could care less if brass adds a little bit of weight when in general it feels smoother and lasts longer. And if you picked up 2 identical reels side by side that both had gears of each type I doubt you could tell which was which from weight in the hand.

I can help scratching my head after seeing the price of Zillion... so far I'm seeing new Zillion at a same or slightly higher price point vs. Metanium in Japan but the USDM version is offered at a noticeable discount vs. Met. I do hope this is purely Daiwa's pricing strategy and a good news for the folks here.

Just a guess here. Both have an aluminum mag ring/bearing set plate encased in plastic(zion?) for the palm side plate.
