Aldebaran MGL Spool in 2015 Reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Aldebaran MGL Spool in 2015 Reel

Post by Drakestar » Sun Dec 13, 2020 4:26 pm

I have a 2018 MGL Aldebaran and a 2015 version of the reel. Are there any hidden drawbacks to using the new spool in the 2015 reel that I’m missing? (I.e. to take two line/spool options out on the water.) I don’t see any obvious differences in the exploded views and I not planning on servicing the reels for a bit ;) - are there any other upgrades that I’m missing that make the 2018 MGL a superior reel?

2018 spool will not fit the 2015 model. It has a different brake pipe I believe ...

You’re right. I’d swapped spools and the side plates close and the spools turn just fine, but once you compare the break pipes, they’re indeed different.
