Good morning TT
Im looking to pick up a high end shimano to pair with my GLX 892C JWR for light SW use. I’ve had my eye on the Aldebaran 50 MGL but not sure how it would last in the SW. the reel is strictly shore bound, no wading or sand. I’m pretty anal about cleaning my gear before I load it up in the truck to head home as well.
Thanks.
Aldebaran 50 MGL
Re: Aldebaran 50 MGL
I am pretty sure the MGL spools are not recommended for saltwater. It may not be high end enough, but I have been pleased with my Chronarch G fishing the salt.

MGL spool is fine in the salt, it was only the CI4+ spool that had issues. Aldebaran will work well in the salt if you stay up on the maintenance and get some good grease to put on those aluminum gears.

Good to know about the MGL spools. Thanks JB

Re: Aldebaran 50 MGL
And to be more detailed with what I was told from Shimano, the Magnumlite(MGL) spools had issues if they were in a composite frame, which is why they made the Chronarch G. Wouldn’t use the Chronarch MGL in salt, even though I haven’t really heard of any problems. No issues with metal frame reels though(Aldebaran, Metanium, Curado).
