2021 Shimano Reels

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

The translation of Infinity Drive from Shimano Japan seems to suggest the loss of an Xship bearing. I don't think that's the case. The 19 Ocea Jigger also has Infinity Drive and if you look at the schematics, the Xship bearing is still there. Infinity Drive seems to be a pinion design to get extra support from the spool itself.

The bearing count also supports this. The 14/15 Conquest pretty much maxed out bearings at 12+1. Yet the 21 Conquest has an extra bearing at 13+1 bearings.

1 - Roller bearing
4 - Handle
2 - Levelwind
2 - Spool
2 - Pinion
3 - Driveshaft

Yes 3 on the driveshaft. A Japanese YouTube video I saw show that there's 2 bearings and a spacer at the base of the driveshaft to eliminate in and out handle play.

Of course, all of this is just speculation at this point until the reel is released. Just stuff I found on the internet.

Yeah if you look at the cutaways closely you can see it. They have one bearing in the spool tension knob. One where the pinion goes through the gearbox through the frame. My guess is the infinity drive is just the next version of the Xship technology. I can't wait to get my grubby mitts on one. I was just about to order a '14 101HG. Glad I waited.

You are right, now when you pointed out I can see the bearing, it is hardly noticeable on the very top picture explaining the infinity drive.
So 2 pinion bearings are still here, it is just the spool bearing location is moved.

Interesting to see 3 bearings on the handle shaft, I was wondering where the extra bearing is and whats the purpose, good info.

I'm still running the Calcutta Conquest 14 model and its still smooth, I do open it up once a year and clean
and add new grease.

Its definitely one of my all time favorite reels.

I will be picking up a 21 model this year.

I noticed the new Scorpion DC has a different palm side plate than the Curado DC. It looks slimmer because the brake dial is on the bottom.

Holy crap. That's alot of dough.
I thought the old model was expensive enough.
I guess my wallet will say "No" to this new model.
That's okay, my old ones are still running perfectly.

Just wait until it’s actually available... Japanese street prices will be lower.

SLX BFS should cone around 185USD or so street price. Not terrible for a ready to go BFS reel that isnt an AliExpress reel.

Was hoping for something different but, it has its perks.
Depending on what site, its a little over $200 🤷‍♂️

The product page says this in the models section: “ Delivery starts at the end of March, your price $703, $100 deposit”.
