I had another reel that sometimes balked when I turned the handle to reengage the spool.
This time I went straight to replacing the pinion gear.
Worked like a charm.

Glad to help. I learned by trial and error, so I like to share and save others from chasing the same ghosts that I chased.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.
