The year is 2004 and you have a TD-Z...

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

What parts do you put on it? Not looking to modernize a TD-Z but to build a period correct reel for a potential period rod. Looking to capture the early 2000s enthusiast vibe. I assume a straight carbon handle is in order but I hate the weird bulbous nub TDZ drag star. Is there a straight star option that isn't just an Alphas/Pixy star? What did ZPI offer? I'm planning out a TD-Z 105HL flipping frame build. I already have a Type R+ spool ready and a ZPI style straight carbon handle. OG corkies for knobs too.

Yeppers...and the other renditions, TD-Ito, Type R and Type R+ all came out about the same time.

The hot drag star of the day was the red one off of Type R+...also, some peeps started figuring out that the Zillion drag stars also fit.

The Zillion drag star or TD Advantage HSTA star. Ize swept carbon handle and OG cork knobs. BOCA orange seal bearings or if really high end ZPI bearings, And a custom paint job from Calfish. Tuned by Ian Shields. That is the ultimate enthusiast reel from that time period.

Haha, hells yeah Mango! I still rock the OG straight ZPI CF handle on my TDX HSDF.

Also, a few of the members here on TT (including myself) gathered a few reels (mostly TDZs) as a package shipment to the ZPI factory in Japan for custom paint work. Man, that was like 2002-2003 I think, I had my TDZ 105P painted with a pearl white center stripe and candy apple green sides, added OG corks with ZPI black CF handle, bearing upgrades and Carbontex. It was a straight up wicked cranker on a custom GLoomis CB 845 mahogany blank (that I still own) built by TT member Henry Eng in like 2001.

Most of my reels are from that era. I guess it's kind of weird how small mechanical things can acquire such sentimental value.

To me the pace of innovation and quality improvements with our bass reels around that time is unmatched.

This is what I ended up with for my two early 2000s Daiwas. The TD-X got a straight carbon handle, TD-Z drag star, OG corks with an acorn style nut from a Tatula HD Custom while not from the period has a period look and doesn't require a clicker. It's just fat for the sake of being fat. The weird TD-S gets a TD-Z drag star, TD-Z handle, pixy spool tension knob, zillion knobs and an R+ spool. I've got a ZPI spool for the TD-X that came with the reel but prefer it in an OG Steez LTD so the TD-X gets a not so period SS SV 103 spool. Gotta get another vintage ZPI spool.
