New Frogging Reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

New Frogging Reel

Post by Drakestar » Wed May 11, 2022 7:54 pm

I'm thinking about upgrading my frogging reel for this season. What's everybody using these days? Looking for the typical frogging qualities: great drag, high gear ratio, 90+mm handle. By default I think I'll go with a morethan PE XH since PE + brass gears in the XH model seem to make perfect sense.

But... I'd like to consider all other options first :)

Yeah man, that Morethan 8.6 for sure and add a Zillion 8.5 and Bantam XH.

I'm using an old IP68 with IP79 gears and an HLC spool for normal size 1/2 to 11/16 oz frogs. Tatula 153 spool in a 150 HD Custom with 8:1 gear swap for the big frogs. Fuego CT with Elite Long Cast spool for 1/4 oz baby frogs. I was using a Zillion HD with Catalina TW spool but that's on a punching rod now.

If I was to buy a new high end frog reel my top candidate would be a Steez A HLC. I would probably buy and sit on a Zillion G based main gear or just drop it in on day one to wear the two together. I like bombing frogs over big weed beds with moss on them and have a preference for HLC spools for this in my Dajwas.

Hmm, I got a Steez HLC. Might try it out.

You can get the zillion hd brass gears from plat for around 40 bucks right now to have on hand should the aluminum hlc gears ever wear out. I’ve put a couple sets in my alphas TWs along with the clicking drag and they are very nice.

I use a Daiwa Tatula Elite Long Cast 100HS. I use a reel handle from the Tatula Elite Pitch/Flip

Oh yeah the 22 Zillion HD looks good too but the line cap looks a little low for 65# braid and bigger frogs. I like throwing the Terminator Walking Frog a lot and that guy can empty a 36mm TD Zillion HLC of line. For a 34mm sorta-shallow new Zillion spools I would want to drop down to a 50# braid if making long bomb casts.

Hmm, what's the handle size on that 22 Zillion HD again? Might be an option if I use 65lbs Maxcuatro.

Same as the old HD. Looks comically large on the tiny new zillions.

Alright, I decided to give the 22 Zillion a try. Thanks for all suggestions!
