Any Zillion SVTW that could be upgraded?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Any Zillion SVTW that could be upgraded?

Post by Big-Donkey » Fri Feb 10, 2023 1:16 pm

I wanted to know, before I tear it apart, if any bushings or other parts could be upgraded from the factory. I just added the 2 extra bearings in the knobs. Can the spool tension knob be upgraded to a clicker style? Thanks for any tips

The tension knob is a "zero adjuster". Daiwa says you don't have to ever adjust that knob, not even when it is bought new. It always comes tighter than I prefer, so I do adjust it once. From then on, I only use the magnetic dial. There is no way to make it click.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Thanks buddy. Anything else you have noticed that should be upgraded? You always have some trick stuff, any added colored items?

You don’t really need to upgrade Zillion SV TW. If you want to add more versatile, you can get different spool like shallow spool for lighter weight. You can also switch to carbon handle to even save more weight or make it longer. As far as color, this is mine. I have 3 spools for this reel, stock spool 15lb FC for jig, this amo spool for 10lb mono, weightless plastic like Senko Fatika and Ray’s spool 15lb braid for ultra finesse or when fish around weed.

The one is picture is Ray’s knob. You have to be careful with color parts from different brand especially purple. They are different tone as you can see the spool tension knob is darker than star drag.

You can change the spool tension knob. The stock one is pretty ugly. I use a cheap chinease one and drag star from Aliexpress.

We have a while thread on Daiwa reels and parts you can check out.

Jeez, I just received this stuff from "The place to buy everything". I ordered a bunch of items but only this came in. I bought one for 20.00 and it came with a bunch of handle nuts and a silver nut retainer. I havent installed it yet but the handle is the Balls for 20.00. I will post a pic of it installed. Hope it fits. :-k [-o<

You can get the same handle on Alexpress for probably half of that. Those are OK but I prefer the Steam Angler $13 handles like I have pictured above because they have a Daiwas style RCS carbon handle appearance. The Basszone Ebay handles are also similar. All the carbon handle stuff you see on Amazon is just marked up Aliexpress stuff. They buy it there, wait 4 weeks for it to show up then resale for profit on Amazon. The particular handles you have should take Daiwa knobs. The only issue might be that Daiwa retainer plates for the nut might not align with the screw hole and you have to use what came with the handle. The stock retainer is a gross plastic thing so this will be an upgrade but won't have as high end appearance as a colored Daiwa plate IMO. I like the Daiwa big flat plate I have here on this Tatula or the skeletal style plates on the reels above.

I wanted to add. Many things from carpet to tile to apparently aluminum parts are tough to keep colors the same. Especially if were talking about less expensive parts. Many companies use lot numbers because they know its near impossible to keep colors exact. As you said, different companies may have different ideas of what a certain color should be attachment]so I figure variations are inevitable.

On mine i've removed the 4 bushings, and replaced them by quality bearings from the steez tw, replaced that ugly plastic nut retainer by one from hedgehog, 90mm carbon handle from rcs, zpi ceramic hybrid bearings on the spool and the side plate, ito cork knobs, slp1010 spool, cast control cap and star drag from the 2018 ryoga and the engine cover and the cast control collar from the steez a because the plastic ones were bothering me like nothing else could. Now i feel like this reel has reached perfection, and the only thing i would like, is a full magnesium version.

I better order some more Zillions. Seperate question for anyone: How close is the Zillion to the new Metanium?

SSS, any pics?

Thanks. But i wish the color wasn't silver, and if it was, it'd be a "special" kind of a silver, something similar to what the steez limited has (minus the garbage paint that chips within one day of usage lol)
