Best way to coat the first foot of braid to prevent tangling

Post by toddmc » Wed Nov 30, 2011 2:39 pm

Hey guys. I love to fish braid on top for fast moving fish. Unfortunately, my braid wraps around topwater hooks, as well as spinnerbait and buzzbait frames. I don't feel the braid scares these fast moving fish and I hate using leaders. Do any of you have any ideas on a coating that would stiffen the first few inches of line enough to prevent tangling?

You could try waxing a section of line. A Chapstick would work in a pinch. Switching to mono is another option.

check out Brent Ehrler's LC Gunfish video, he uses a leader with braid for topwater

First suggestion: use a monofilament leader

Second suggestion: fly fishing floatant

Third suggestion: sewing thread wax

I remember reading elsewhere where it was suggested to use a length of the smallest diameter coffee stirrer straw you could find. It's placed on the line before tying the bait on.

Is sewing thread wax harder than Chap Stick? Chap Stick makes mono and fluoro float better, but I have not had great results with it making braid much stiffer. I am looking for possibly some sort of clear liquid that might stiffen the line just the right amount.

Maybe try some fly head cement the line. It will take a little time to dry it.

I might have a better solution for you. How about a knot that positions the line dead straight in front of the lure?

Google "holmes braid knot"

I got it now. Use that hollow core braid and stick some mono into it. :big grin:

Yes, beeswax (sewing wax) is a slightly "stiffer" line coating than chap stick.
