BRAID, MONO or FLOURO - all around line??
BRAID, MONO or FLOURO - all around line??
I have a rod that is a very good all around rod and I am having trouble deciding what line to use with it. Because I don't usually bring all my rods fishing, I am looking for the most versatile line for this particular rod that I like to use with a bunch of different techniques.
so...........
Wondering out of the 3 main lines you would consider the best all around line and why if you want to type why!
Thanks.

Re: BRAID, MONO or FLOURO - all around line??
I may be biased but I can't go past Braid for just about everything. A lot of people think it will destroy their guides or break the rod but for me it's the best thing that happened to fishing since they stopped using catgut. Braid allows better bite detection due its lack of stretch, and it casts better. Also due to its smaller diameter in relation to mono you can fit more on the spool. It's just a matter of picking the right braid for the gear you want to use.

Thats a good call, I have been using braid for most of my combos but still have mono on my crankbait setup which may change soon to flouro.angry john wrote:X2cndbasshunter wrote:braid mainline with the appropriate leader.

For all around, especially with topwaters, jerkbaits and treble hook lures.angry john wrote:X2cndbasshunter wrote:braid mainline with the appropriate leader.

Hi,
I bank fish alot so using just 1 or 2 rods are the norm for me. (all are 2 pc. models)
My main allround setup uses braid (20 or 30lbs depending on grass) + a flouro leader.
I throw everything with a 6'6", MH Fast on my CQ51.
Pitching, flipping, spinnerbaits, buzzbait,T-rigs, Jigs, worms.
I adjust my hook setting power, hook setting style, rod movement etc depending on what I have tied on.
The second rod is either
- a spinning setup with 10lbs braid + mono leader (split shotting) or flouro leader (drop shot, shakey heads)
- a BC set up with 50lbs braid for frogs and for more heavier grass. (No leader)
Braid + appropriate leader material will cover most of your fishing needs.

Braid on my reels.
With 2pc rods breaking them down may cause an issue with fluoro lines kinking the line near the connection point. No real experience with that just thinking there could be.

BRaid with a back to back Uni or Improved Albright is hard to beat. I find that some braids work better than others, particularly on baitcasters. I use a rod length of flouro carbon.

I like mono myself for all around stuff. I've tried braid with crankbaits and spinnerbaits, didn't like it much. A good high quality mono like Toray Polyamide Plus or Shooter Defier is hard to beat. The Polyamide Plus even offers good sensitivity since it's a bit stiffer like fluoro, but still has very good knot strength and pretty good abrasion resistance.

I'm now at the point where I use braid on everything...maybe a flourocarbon leader under bright and/or clear conditions...

Braid +fluorocarbon leader.
Re: BRAID, MONO or FLOURO - all around line??
I love fluoro and use it all the time but it can't be an all around line since topwaters need a floating line like braid or mono. So since I like fishing fluoro so much, my all around line is braid. That way, I can use a mono leader when fishing topwaters and a fluoro leader for everything else.
