Toray Superhard Upgrade

Post by Jeffbro999 » Fri Jul 05, 2013 9:11 am

Just bought a spool to try in 16lb. Ive tried all the seaguar products including Tatsu in 15lb as leader material for speckled trout, redfish and stripers and had lots of abrasion problems(not as bad with the Tatsu). Seems the Toray may be the answer. I have read the TT reviews more than once which is what led me to this line. Was wondering about anyones experience with it regarding abrasion resistance and knot strength. Thanks, Jeff

Its the best fluorocarbon that I have used on casting gear. Most sensitive/dense and abrasion resistant that I have fished. I have 14,16, and 20, which I use the most, and tie the "Shaw Grigby"/SD Jam variant, with no knot strength issue. Very tough stuff.

Thanks, great info. Ill have to try that knot, much appreciated.I thought about trying the 20 but figured the 16 should work well for jerks and cranks for the species listed. Id like to go lower lb test but I hate loosing pointers and flashminnows to these agressive things. They love to strike on the pause so i was also wondering about impact strength? Thanks alot, Jeff

The 16 is more than enough for crank/jerkbaits. I use it only for bottom bait apps...mostly jigs. 14 for finesse jigs, 16 for 1/2 oz football jigs, and 20 for 3/4 oz football/ 1/2 oz flippin jigs. Great stuff but maybe overkill for moving baits unless your having serious abrasion issues. One of its greatest benefits is its sensitivity...which you don't need as much for the apps you mentioned...but anyway, great line.

Yeah even I think its overkill, Id love to scale down to 12 but the 15lb tatsu I was using this past winter I was retieing every other fish fishing jerkbaits in the rivers for trout.I think its the stained water and the way they hit it having to do with the abrasion plus any piece of wood in the water is covered in barnacles. We also have striper to 35lbs that will tangle you in it good.Good to hear about the sensitivity as i was looking at the 20lb for a jig line. Thanks for your help.

It's # 1 in my book in terms of abrasion resistance and sensativity. I only use it on my jig and Texas rigged setups.

Thanks for the info guys.Think I might try to scale down a little in the future after I try the 16lb. May try the 12 or 14 for jerks since it sounds very tough. Then I can put the 16 on my jig stick.

Just a little update on this awesome line.Used it in 16 lb as leader with 20 lb Performance Braid.Went out wading 4 days this week after work.Went to my best redfish spot and threw jerkbaits for about 2 hours the first 2 evenings.Caught 16 reds over 20" the fist day, 19 more the next evening up to 32" all on the same spot,a small drain in some grass. They were schooled real tight and I could feel the line hitting other fish that were chasing mine during the fight.Never even the slightest nick in the line in 2 days, never re-tied once.No problem. Then threw Pop-X in a local pond last 2 nights and caught 16 bass with a 7.5lb.landed through some nasty stuff, same deal no abrasion at all. Im sold. Will be trying it in 12 lb next since this 16 is sooo strong. To me Tatsu doesnt come close except for it being so easy to cast compared to the Toray.
