What size braid for spinning reel?
What size braid for spinning reel?
Hello,
I want to start using braid on my spinning reels. RTight now I just use straight fluro in the 6-10 range usually for drop shotting for smallies up on the great lakes but line twist have become a real problem and fluro is expensive so I was wondering what pound test braid is typical for spinning rods when using 6-10 pound test leaders? I was looking at the sunline braid.
Thanks for any info guys.

20lb braid is normally similar in diameter to 6lb mono. If I were you I would use that with a 10 lb flouro leader. That setup for jigging and dropshotting should last forever so long as you replace the leader every so often. When you get hung up it will break right at the hook knot or the leader knot. You might go through 15 ft of braid a year.joeim8 wrote:Hello,

I have used 10lb and 20lb braid on spinning reels. I much prefer the 20lb.

Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
I use 6lb Fireline Fuse (original) with 10lb leader.
Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
I'd go 16lbs SX-1 to 8-10lbs test fluoro of your choice.
Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
I like 15# or 20# braid...doesn't really matter. Whatever I have on hand is what I spool up with.
Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
10lb to 20lb braid is the most common..I actually prefer something in the middle..14,15,16 lb. Diameter varies with braid label rating, just as it does with fluoro and mono. I prefer a .007"-ish diameter.

Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
I, like most everyone else, suggest 20#. I've gone as high as 30# but didn't feel I received any additional benefits over 20#. I've settled on 20# as the best "compromise" for my uses with spinning gear. It casts well, handles well, and is small enough in diameter that you get plenty of line even with smaller (Shimano 1000) sized reels while at the same time being big enough in diameter that it doesn't "dig" into itself causing problems.
Using 6 to 10# leaders you probably wouldn't run into any digging problems anyway as you'd have your drag set accordingly. I most often use 15# leaders as I'm mostly fish docks or rocks. I've found it very beneficial to use the higher pound test leaders while skipping docks with jigs. If I know I'm going to primary fish points or humps or just general open water situations with say a shakey head then I'll use the 10# leader. I haven't noticed much difference in my number of bites while using the 15# leader so this also plays into my using that pound test most often.
I've tried a few different brands on my spinning gear, right now I have regular PP on one, Sufix 832 Ghost on another, and P-Line Spectrex IV on a third, all in 20#. If you forced me to pick a favorite out of those today I'd have to go with the 832 Ghost. It has performed very well for me in my limited use so far with it, I've only had it spooled on for a few months. I know some might find it hard to believe because it's an older 4 carrier line but the Spectrex is the best handling longest casting of the bunch. The only reason I picked 832 over Spectrex is because it's not as loud through the guides.
P-Line is coming out with a new 8 carrier braid at ICAST I think, not positive on this of course but they did release a new 8 carrier braid in Europe this year so I just assumed they'd bring it here as well. Power Pro Super 8 Slick is also fantastic on spinning gear. I have a friend who uses 15# S8S and loves it.
Sorry to have rambled on for so long and getting slightly off topic, I'm just really into braid right now so I enjoy discussing it.

Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
If it's a 2000 size spinning reel, I personally use 8lb Fireline. If it's a 3000 size, then I bump up to 14lb Fireline.
Re: What size braid for spinning reel?
30lb PP, Superslick, or 832. I use that size on 3000-4000size reels. I also found that wind knots were more prevalent with anything smaller. Most of the ones listed above are the same diameter as 8lb mono...ish and handle very well. Fluoro leaders are fairly standard when using braid on spinning gear in my applications. Hope that helps.

12# for finese, 20# to 30# for everything else.
