Hi all,

just made the purchase of my first NRX. A 852c. I am super excited. I will be pairing the rod with a Abu Garcia MGEXTREME 2.

I am wondering what line you would be recommending to use?

The techniques that I will be using are:

1. Ned Rig
2. Worms and 1/8 - 1-4 oz Jigs
3. Jerkbaits

I was thinking of 7 or 8 pound Sunline Shooter, since I want the best sensitivity from the line. Wondering if I should run straight fluro, or should I do a braid to fluro set up? What braid would you recommend here? I have seen some negative reports on the recoil guides getting damaged on the NRX, so I am a bit worried.

Sensitivity and reduced visibility are my priorities.

Using it with Ned rids and braid may lead to some lost fish. It is a really nice rod but, I feel a Ned rig plus braid on this rod may not have enough give, unless using bigger hooks.

A 10lb FC will treat you well. You can still get a hookset into the jigs and ned rigs. The jerkbaits will do fine as well.

I like using Sniper for lighter stuff like this. Really nice, versatile line at a good price.

I was thinking of something like 20 Braid with a 8 pound fluro leader (shooter) for maximum of sensitivity. I am actually a bit surprised that you say that the rod will not have enough give. When I played with the rod a bit in the store it looked like that I would almost need braid to set the hook or really slam the rod on a hook set.

Since the rod is really towards finessey stuff I was wondering if a 7-8 fluro (5-6 feet leader) would not be the best.

I ran both 10lb fluoro and 20lb braid to leader and I lose less fish with braid to leader. I feel the braid + leader allows for much better hooksets with single hook baits. I fish a lot of deeper waters so that might be why as well.

I use 20lb braid to 8-12lb fluorocarbon.

I am running 9# Shooter for now. Will consider a braid to fluro solution in the future. Spooling the full reel with Shooter is not cheap...

Shooter and Sniper are both thin enough so I would go with 12#. You still come in probably around .28 mm and the 12 # allows you to set hooks with those jigs and steer bass from cover if you need to. I love that rod but it’s hard to steer big fish quickly if caught near a dock or brush pile. And I’ve had trouble with single hook weedless applications that require a hookset on light fluorocarbon, it’s easy to break off. Good luck and that Shooter you bought is expensive but worth it.

I am using Sunline Xplasma Asegai in 16lb, with 3 to 6ft of .3mm fluoro leader material. Very happy with it, no guide issues using an Albright knot. But if I were using straight fluorocarbon I would opt for one of the limper better handling lines like Sniper or Tatsu in 10 or 12lb, and stay away from the stiffer lines like Shooter.

Don't have that particular rod, but use a similar setup for one of my exprides and run 10lb invisX on it.
I don't fish heavy cover with a medium powered rod, and the hooks on these types of baits are pretty light wire you you don't need crazy hooksets.
Both braid to leader and straight fluoro would work well for your targeted applications. It's mostly a question of taste and being bothered or not by connection knots !

I use 20lb J braid to 8lb flouro leader.

16lb sunline Xplasma is what I been using.

I made some changes.

I am running a Steez CT SV TW on the NRX with green 7pound Sunline Sniper. So far so good. Obviously not a combo for anything cover, but I can throw a 1/8oz jig almost 100 feet.

Might switch to braid backing at some point, but so far pure FC works for me.
