Which braid for heavy jig set up?

Post by freelancer27 » Wed May 22, 2019 10:58 pm

Hi all,

I am playing around with a different braid ideas for my heavy Jig combo, where I have been running pure 16# Sunline Sniper so far. In order to get a bit more line capacity on the reel (new Morethan) I am looking into different braid options. I am still planning to run a 16/18 # fluro leader.

Looking for a braid that casts very well (the Morethan is a casting machine and I can easily unspool it when spooled with 16# FC), is sensitive and does not bleed that bad.

Considerations so far:

* Power Pro Super8Slick V2 Braided Line Onyx

* Daiwa J-Braid Grand 8X Braided Line Gray Light

* Suffix 832

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Seb.

V2 is good but <40lb test in my experience digs in bad
I’m looking to go up to 65lb test soon as work cools off

My rod is the Steez Frog rod. Football head 3/4 - 1.5 oz. Would also throw a paddletail swimbait every now and then. Cover from pretty open to medium cover.

16lb Sniper has a diameter of .33mm. 30lb braid is the bare minimum I would want to use in your situation. Aquaholik’s line test posts has 30lb J-Braid Grand listed at .0128” or .325mm so I don’t think that would help you out. 30lb Sunline Xplasma Asegai is about the same, maybe slightly thicker. 30lb 832 is noticeably thicker, I have no experience with PPSS V2.

A reel or spool with greater capacity may be a better option. For instance, I have a Chronarch MGL mounted on my Zillion frog rod for 3/4oz football jigs & larger paddle tails, it holds 75yds of 50lb Sufix Performance Braid fully spooled which is enough for me, haven’t spooled it yet.

Yeah. I have to play around with the diameters. I think if I have a long enough leader it should be enough for a shock absorber.

Also played with getting a Steez a spool, which holds a bit more line.

I vote for 832. 50# is .34 diameter so that seems the same as 16# Sniper. Hmmm......

YGK G-Soul Upgrade X-8 Braided Line- 50# has a diameter of .285 and the 40# is .235mm.

I have tried many of the lines listed above and this line is just in another realm.

Varivas Avani Casting PE SMP (Super Max Power)
50# is size PE 3 (.285mm)

https://www.varivas.co.jp/Product/searchgroup/id:1827

I think I have had mine spooled up for about 14 months now and have used it in freshwater and saltwater. Still looks and acts brand new.

No dig, and a dream to cast. I have to work really hard to backlash this line.

Pricey, but I would call it a very good value.

This is the only forum I can post these types of things and not get laughed off, ridiculed or suspended. :D I think I bought a 300 meter spool on sale for +/-$75, If I wasn't filling my 1520 spool top to bottom, I would have been able to get 4 spools of 75 meters out of that purchase. Which would be on par value wise with some of the other upper end braids and fluro.

I think they offer a free Zebco/Ugly Stick combo with the purchase of the 600 meter spool

A little late to the party but hoping someone else with the same question in the future can use this. Like cndbassin said.

Sunline FX2 is the the deal. It stays round and the rough texture is great for tying leaders, especially the FG knot. I’ve had 50lbs on my Curado I since that reel was released and the blue/green camo color still has not faded. There’s just less of the braid on the spool and I have to use longer leaders since I trim a bit off after tying leaders. I usually use 15lbs AbraZx and everything up to 20lbs for leaders.

I’ve seen the varvas come off a reel
It’s like silk in motion. Unbelievable just to watch.

I used to only use fx2 and 832, but I've completely switched over to p line tcb 8 and absolutely love it from 10lb to 50lb
