Favorite 6 ft or less square bill

Post by drenner43 » Sun Nov 25, 2012 7:46 am

I'm currently using mainly Lucky Craft square bills. What is everybody else's favorite? Anything else I should be trying? :?:

Rapala DT Fat 3 and the Flat 3, both of these are excellent! I also found that I'm really liking the cheap Bomber Square A, it is cheap but it is 3/8oz in a small compact body and when you stop it dead or hit a sump or laydown with it the bait has a little roll as it floats up, it caught a lot of fish at the beginning of fall. I'm looking at getting the Biggie square bills from River2sea next season but for now the DT Fat and the super cheap Bomber Square A are what I'm liking right now!!

I've been planning to get a few Rapala's, thanks for the suggestions. That bomber doesn't sound too bad, I may have to try that bomber out too. What colors are you running?

If I were forced to only have one square bill bait it would have to be the LC RC 1.5 in the Copper Green Shad color. I also have caught a bunch of fish on the Strike King KVD 1.5 in different baitfish colors. A bait that's also produced well for me over the years and one I hardly ever hear mentioned is the Bandit 100 series. They are good quality baits for their price and they just flat catch fish for me. Due to the price it also doesn't hurt to lose one of these like it does a LC. The only weak point in these baits IMO are the stock hooks, I just change them out with the Mustad KVD trebles and then it's good to go.

The DT Fat 3 I like Blue Shad, Bleeding Olive Shiner, and Silver. The same thing in the Flat 3, for the Bomber I like Oxbow and Black Scale Chartreuse. To be honest the Bomber I discovered by accident, it is a cheap bait that was given to me for my birthday y a friend who knows very little about fishing but wanted to give me a present and not just a gift card. I used it a week after I got it fishing a stump field a day after a front rolled through, we ran the usual square bills and spinnerbaits with no luck and we were going to start making pitches with jigs and soft plastics. When I reached in my bag to get my crank box to put away the Rapala I spoted the Bomber Square A and thought it had a small profile, what the heck, I'll give it a dozen cast or so to try it out. I got to my 3rd cast and had a fish, 2 casts after that I had another and before I quit I caught 9 fish on the bait, my buddy caught 1 on the Rapala. The Bomber works fantastic for such a cheap bait but you should change the hooks out, after my 3rd fish the hooks were shot and so I switched them out to regular Mustad triple grips. I own 7 of the Bombers now with 5 being oxbow and 2 chartreuse black scale.

I'm a big fan of the LC RC 1.5 as well. Sounds like I really need to try a few KVD 1.5's too from all the suggestions of it.

Lucky Craft RC 1.5 is my personal favorite, but a really nice alternative, especially for the price, is the XCalibur squarebills. Great terminal tackle, decent colors, and really a nice all-around bait. It does not, however, posses that extra indeterminable essence that baits such as Lucky Craft's do, at least not for me.

Took a look at some of the Spro's and they look pretty good. I may get a few of those to try. I may try the XCalibur for a cheap alternative though from looking at them in the past, I don't think i'm too crazy about them
