Fenwick Techna AV
Fenwick Techna AV
Has anyone tried a Techna AV out? i was handling one at a tackle shop today and it felt really nice. does anyone have anything positive to say about them or can compare the graphite to any other rod? Also, i was wondering why the price has risen on them since last year. they've gone up 50 dollars!
Re: Fenwick Techna AV
I have a Techna AV spinning rod as well as several Croix Avids, a Loomis Bronzeback, and a Croix Legend Elite. The Techna AV is the most unbelievably sensitive stick...almost annoyingly so if that can make ANY sense. I don't like the SS guides they use although I think they have changed over to Alconite guides this year, I don't like the aesthetics, and I don't like the fore grip clicking design that locks down onto the reel seat....mines damaged from simply being used. I was going to try a BC version because the unbelievable sensitivity and the fact that it appears they have changed the guides but I'm pretty sure the warranty has gone from lifetime to five years simply based on the fact I couldn't find anything on their website to contradict. +...their website sucks...they don't even list the action of their rods, just the power ratings. I think it's a shame because as mentioned there blanks are super sensitive but they just drop the ball in many other areas to ensure they will not "run with the big boys" if you catch my drift. The action of my medium spinning rod is like a moderate fast action fwiw.

I use to use them several years ago. I was told by someone that the current AVs are made in China. Mine have "Made in the USA" on them. If I remember correctly, mine felt very 'stiff' .

I have 2 Techna AV baitcasters: a 7' MF and a 6'6" MF. The warranty IS 5 years and I do have the SS guides and used both rods extensively last summer.
Guides: absolutely no problems with the guides. (See TT review on Fenwick HMG rod review).
Sensitivity & lightness: Agree with what Scot said: they are very impressive in this categories. Certainly every bit as good as Loomis GL3 which I compared them against except they cost less (and I had the $ for the Loomis rods).
Action: Fast & crisp.
Workmanship: very good
I think they are underrated rods.
Would I buy another?: spinning for sure.
Baitcasting line: not really a lot of choice.

I love mine. Its a 2 piece for the Asian market - 7 ft 8-20lb for spinning. Sensitive, tough construction. The Fenwick titanium coated guides may look unattractive but they're much tougher than Fuji Alconite and SiC.
Example was when I bought one at a tackle fair, the OTG sales rep deliberately bent a guide on his demo rod and then gently pushed it back into shape. I don't think one can do that with Fuji Alconite and SiC.
I have caught fish weighing from 300 grams to 5 kg+ with this rod. Although a 2 piece, it performs flawlessly. So far, there have been no line tangles on the guides. A sensitive and light rod given its poundage but dull on aesthetics.

If you like their rods you might want to try out a JDM.

Here is the link to the fenwick rods sold in japan. You will see there are much different standards of how a rod should be built in Japan.
If you want to really get a kick out of how diferent the standards are to sale a rod in japan take a look at the ABU offerings .

Re: Fenwick Techna AV
Technically, wouldn't the rods pictured above be considered Fenwick's "Japan export market" rods since Fenwick's domestic market is the US?
