which reel for big cranks

Post by c-rig823 » Tue Jul 31, 2007 10:30 pm

thanks guys for the help with my previous question about which cranks to buy....i picked up a few poes and fat free shads and one LC (looked too nice) but now i found even though i have the curado 300 handle on my curado 200 7-1 for extra leverage these monsters put alot on load the reel i know the rod (powell 703CB) is a good one for this app. but was wondering if the 7-1 curado is too fast for these deep cranks...if so which reel would handle them better?

thanks

I love my Curado 200 for deepcranks.
Crank it slow to keep it deep, Crank medium for speed and fast for a different look/get back to the boat asap.
I also like the fact that once I locate a hole/bump/ridge I can vertically pull up the bait and fast reel to catch up the line and get the bait going again quickly.
+ with deepcranks being so heavy I can turn the brakes almost all the way off and cast a mile.

A lower gear ratio will make it a lot easier to turn the handle. Also, you probably don't want to be running cranks that fast anyway. You'll be able to get the bait lower if you slow down a little.

Zillion Crazy Cranker is the best I've ever fish a deep crank with. Adding a 90 mm handle make it nicer. I have it on a George Roth custom from a Seeker E-Glass 706 MH blank.

My best reel for deep cranking currently in my arsenal is a Calcutta 100DC.

Since no one has mentioned it yet, my favorite deep crank reel is the Antares 5 (Calais 200 with low gear).

Yep, the 201 DC will do the job very nicely.

I use a Calcutta TE100GT spooled with Sunline Defier (13LB).

It is sweet.
