I have often wondered about this reel. I am thinking of a little
inshore s/w fishing but at the end of the day bass fishing will
always be. Anyhow, I will be saving up while on deployment
for a new reel. I had thought about the "shimano core" since
I don't own any magnesium reels but honestly Mg reels don't
tickle me in any way. As far as the Calcutta I have always wanted
one. A friend suggested the afore mentioned model. I wanted to
know what you guys thought of it and if you owned one what
application did you use it for? Should I buy new or used? and
could I tell the difference between the two(been looking at ebay)?
I am highly interested in this reel but right now it's price point is a bit
steep for me, what is your take on it's price point, is it worth it?
Bonus Question.
I don't know the guys name but his show comes on "Versus" on the weekends and he fishes for exotic fish, in the amazon and all over.
100% of the time he uses shimano reels and rods. I've seen him toss
big lures out there for peacock bass. Can anyone tell me the reel that
he is using, it's a baitcaster but I can not recognize it?

Re: shimano Calcutta TE200GT
in regards to your amazon guy i think he uses a calais or calais DC because there are stints where he is throwing a lure and it goes right down to the not on the spool.
as far as the calcutta TE 200 you can't really go wrong with this reel especially for inshore SW, some of the bass guys might feel this reel to be a bit heavy unless you are throwing swimbaits but i use the 200GT as well as a 200 DC and 100 DC even for throwing fishtraps and its a blast.

Re: shimano Calcutta TE200GT
You will not go wrong with any of the Calcutta reels. I have a boat full.
They are as tough as it gets in a reel.

Re: shimano Calcutta TE200GT
Best $300 +/- you will ever spend and I can assure you that the money will be long forgotten after a day on the water.....you will want more of them in different sizes.
From the size 50 through the 700 they are ALL top tier reels at the top of the mountain in the reel industry and will last a very long time w/basic maintenence. Some may be a little smoother, some may be a little lighter, some may be a little more modern but NOTHING hits ALL bases with as much mojo or function than the Calcutta series.
For your application I would personally "start out"...( trust me on this one), with a 100/101 size unless your S/W target is large fishes over say 30" that run hard.
That dude in the Amazon rules....I saw one of his shows a while back and he was salt fishing for Sailfish using his 50 sized Calcutta
