TD LUNA

Post by perchot » Tue Sep 04, 2007 6:27 am

Hi!

I want to find a round profile reel for Northern pike / musky. I'm gonna throw BIG jerkbaits, swimbaits, musky spinners, bulldawgs, etc.
I'm considering the LUNA.

Do you have any experience with this reel? Any reviews?

What other options should I consider (under $150): Abu Record, Calcutta?
Which one is more appropriate for good casts, power brakes, no backlashes, endurance, weight?

Thanks!

if you casting big stuff,i reckon the daiwa would be easier to cast further, daiwa is better build as well, with machine cut component all over, rather than forged

I will have to differ with Zest on this. I think the Calcutta is a tank, and very easy to set for casting. It is easy to set up to cast and not backlash when you change direction and suddenly throw into the wind. IMHO

Luna for sure. Calcuttas are good too, but not as smooth as the luna. Records have some problems and I wouldn't get one.

The luna will take the abuse better than any other reel for muskies.

I cast lures for chinnook salmon with a Daiwa Advantage and it's as good as my Millionaire CVZ ( the model prior to the Luna) for a lot less cash. Get the original 153ST model and you get a reel that has a lot of linecap. They are on sale as a righty at Cabelas for $69. Calcutta are way over rated IMO. TE versions are very nice but expensive for what you get. Snidley

i'm using a luna 253 for swimbait fishing. it works superbly for heavy lures and hard running fish. i encounter very few backlashes. i never had one that was serious. its a brute of a reel but its also very refined. you'll be very happy with it.
