Your Favorite Deep Diver Rod

Post by tj1004 »

What rods do you deep crankers prefer.... I am thinking about a Dobyn's but don't really want to pull the trigger on one yet. I don't need the rod to work for anything other than DD22's, DT16's, Mann's 30+, etc....I was looking at 7'6'' rods like the Quantum Paul Elias rod or something similar. I will be using a Conquest 100DC

CBR845 for everything up to CBD-12'sa dn DD14's and a CBR847 D-20's DD22's. The CBR906 is also great, but has a lot of tip.

amazingly enough the Okuma EVX Crankbait rod works well as does my old 7'6 BPS Crankin' Stick. I can't help but want something more though so I have an 8' Dobyns on order! can't wait

Is that an LT or Avid? Fiberglass or graphite? Anyone used the St. Croix Magnum Cranker?

I really like my Daiwa L&T Crankin' rod. It's a composite, real soft tip and plenty of backbone.

The 70HM Avid. Very good for pure deep crankin'.

I've done the LT 70MHM Deep Cranker. Its lighter than the other MHM models in the Avid line. It measures out at having similar power to the Loomis CB845. Feels a bit lighter though with the true Moderate action.

The MHM is a safer bet for covering a lot of cranks. But if you want a dedicated truly deep stick, then the HM is a good option.

I am using the St Croix Legend Tournament Magnum Cranker (TBC710HM). It's 7' 10" rated HM for 12-25 line and 1/2 to 1 3/8 lures. I really like the longer length rod for long casts to get those big baits down deep. It has the moderate action that many folks like for baits with trebles. My only problem is it's a little too long for my rod locker! I have a Calcutta 250 on it. It's one of my favorites plus it's a pretty blue color.

No question I would go with the Dobyns 706CB it can handle a DD-22, and the others listed as well the 705CB could handle a DD-22 but it might be a little light for it the 706CB would be perfect for what you are looking for. If you want a longer rod the 805CB is what you want.

I own a cbr843 and 845, but just added the 'Croix LT Magnum Cranker and I'm in love. I was looking at the cbr906 as well, but Tackle Warehouse put the Magnum cranker and Big Gulp on sale for $154 (they are sold out now). I took it for a spin on Sunday, and I've never thrown a crank so far. It has the ideal action for big deep divers, or hard pulling wobblers around wood.

I've handled but never fished the St Croix Mag Cranker and i think it would be a terrific salmon rod for throwing deep diving stickbaits out of my kickboat. Beautiful stick. Snidley
