I make my own jigs and sometimes I use bands and sometimes I use wire and tie the skirt. For flipping and casting jigs I use the band simply due to the fact that I'm going to throw it into cover so there is a chance it will get hung up and lost. Swimjigs and chatter style jigs I wire tie the skirt as these to will be fished in cover but I don't lose them as ones I'm throwing into limbs and brush.

I tie over top of the bands if they are not tied, just to prevent band breakage or "getting your pants pulled down" as they say.

I didn't realize you were on here Mark. I obviously don't know you personally, but I purchased a bunch of your jigs last year and I have to say they are the best thing I've ever tied on to 60lb braid.
Quality and appearance, rattle setup and that big hook give me the utmost confidence that I am throwing the best jig possible. Such a boost. My tourney partner and I are big fans. If you ever want to advertise north of the border, let me know. Be happy to rock a sticker for you.

No preference. Hand tied last longer but takes longer to adjust. Rubber because it's quick and easy to adjust once tied. I put rattles go on both, some colors with, some without. :big grin:
I will NEVER sell another 3:16 swimbait again!

I voted no preference mainly because I like the fact that I can put a rattle directly on the band on my banded jigs (when needed). I use both and do prefer the hand tied jigs for holding skirts and holding up better. I've also had a few, not a lot, but a few bands break on me in the past.

I replace the rubber band by a tiny cable tie. It's easy to put on and awefully strong.
The thing with hand tied is that you can't switch skirts. That's ok for jigs but what about spinnerbaits?
I saw these skirt rings the other day and wondered how good it is? has anybody tried this?

I'm mixed. Hand tied will last longer and the colors stay positioned but I make my own jigs 99% of the time so have I pre banded skirts I can mix and match with different heads on the water. I have a Plano box full of heads and another box full of skirts I make during the winter. I never run of out a certain jig. One of my favorites is fishing a finesse jig on rip rap - if If you're fishing a jig where you're supposed to, it won't last that long. So, If I break one off I throw the right color skirt and the right weight head and I'm back in business. I can build a jig for less than half the cost of buying one pretied so it's no huge loss if I break one off. It's nice having a huge supply of any jig you can imagine.

I used to tie. But switched to wire a few years back. Much quicker.
