I have found using a fluke style makes the bait "hunt" more like a crankbait does- it doesn't follow a straight path as you reel it in it kicks out from side to side. I use it when I'm fishing offshore and not casting at the bank. For other times I stick to the Optimum Double Diamond or Keitech.

Yes, the fluke style baits are better around schools of bait in open water. The fluke tails have less bulk and drag than bigger paddle tails, causing the bait to be able to hunt with less effort. This can help trigger strikes with finicky schooling fish.
