noob question

Post by adyy » Tue Apr 12, 2011 12:05 am

just a question: what is meant by kayak fishing? it's only related to the fact that you fish from a kayak, or are there other specific facts?

I had the time to read a bit about kayaks and I see that most of the kayaks used are solid built, not inflatable. if using an inflatable kayak, this would be still kayak fishing?

If you are fishing in a kayak, be it wood, plastic, inflatable, styrofoam, whatever, it would be considered kayak fishing.

I guess any small watercraft in the general shape of a kayak could be considered a kayak. Anything that gets you on the water is a good thing.

If you are considering it, go ahead and get one. It will take your fishing to a whole different level.

I was courious about kayaks because I know you can move very fast with them, on a lake.

I have a small inflatable boat for 1+1 people. I think that is enough for the moment.

The most common Kayak fishing is off shore Salt water fishing. This type of kayak fishing uses a "sit on top" kayak.
There is a "sit in" kayak that is the style of the ones you see in the Olympics. Now your local REI and Bass Pro shops carries both. Heres the kicker both kayaks can be bought in a "tandem" 2 people model.

here's a video of a really well known Southern California Salt water "sit on top" kayak fisherman getting towed by a shark

Many people fish bass from them too.... I have 2 and love them both. One a sit in and one a sit on top. The sit in gets used mostly when the water is colder, I stay drier that way. That said, all kayaks are not created equally and dont handle fishing type situations equally. I can stand in both of mine if I want to, wouldnt try that in a whitewater type boat for example. That said though, that inflatable will get you out on the water just fine. Go explore and have fun! I just fish bass so thats all I can really comment on but there are certain situations where a kayak is a far more effective craft than a bass boat. Ask the guys I followed through a shallow bay yesterday.
