20lb Musky caught on ultra light tackle....

Post by Ranger 619VS » Tue Dec 04, 2012 2:01 pm

Hey guy's,

Pinnacle of my ultra light fishing career! 39" in length, 19" in diameter Musky! Caught on my favorite G. Loomis TSR 801-2 ultra light matched to a Daiwa Exist 1003H native custom reel. 4lb Berkley Fireline crystal with a 6lb vanish leader. 1/16oz jighead and a 1" Zoom sassy shad body in color dace. 25 minute fight....Landed by my friend using only a boga grip. I was spent and totally stoked.....Pure luck that it hit my little lure and that the leader did not break. Was one hell of a fight though.

How long did it take to revive and release?

A long fight wiht a Musky damages it big time. It takes up to 15-20 mins to revive sometimes.

Musky,

25 minutes at the boat side and he or she swam away with major tail kicks, damn neat broke my wrist. Water temps were in mid 30's so I think she was ok. I did not mean to harm the fish in anyway. Hence why I made sure to rest her and work her till she was ready to go.

Awesome Brian - well done! UL doesn't get better than this! That's a respectable fish on any gear, never mind the toothpicks we favour. Hooked outside the mouth I guess?

Wow!!

That's really nice!!

That monster obviously didn't get the memo about having no interest in tiny lures. :D

Rolfe,

Believe it or not it was hooked in the roof of the mouth. The leader got behind the hinge of his jaw and thus the leader some how did not rub on his teeth. Really was dumb luck a fish that size eating a perch lure. Was an amazing fight though, peeled off line 30 to 40 yards at a clip. Once he cleared the water with his entire body. I know it is not wise to fight this large a fis on ultra light gear. But I have hooked equal sized or bigger Msuky and always been bitten off or leader snapped. This one was a special landing. I made sure to work him and did not release until he powered out of my hand. Truly an amazing animal.

Way to go =D> =D> . I'd be stoked to get that on my regular pike gear, Loomis MBR 783C / Okuma Komodo, but I'd be in seventh heaven to take it on my UL kit. Well done.
