Favorite Artificial Panfish Bait
What do you guys like when targeting finicky panfish? I don't like using live bait because of having to rebait every time. Any suggestions?
Re: Favorite Artificial Panfish Bait
I use a Falls Jig-n-minnow size 3 (1/32) on 4 lb. mono. I am not sure they are still made. Homer Circle did an article on small panfish lures, and this is one he mentioned, it works for me.

These are panfish crack - 1 1/2" Charlie Brewer Crappie Slider Grub. They're deadly on a 1/16 jig head. Burn them, yo yo them, rip 'em side to side ... what fun They come in about 100 different colors. Solid black with a glow tail or junebug with a chartreuse tail are staples.

U use this for crappie? Do bluegills have a problem with fitting it in their mouths?
Re: Favorite Artificial Panfish Bait
Only the smallest 'gills have trouble getting it down, but every now and again even they manage. Hook size will be more of a factor than the bait itself.marvinlee718 wrote:U use this for crappie? Do bluegills have a problem with fitting it in their mouths?
My observation on (larger) crappie is they can eat just about anything they're after - I've caught them on bass size spinnerbaits, 5" flukes, top water Pop R's, 7" worms, you name it. I swear they can unhinge their jaw like a snake or something
I've literally caught just about every species of fish in my waters on these grubs (except catfish) ... quite a few 3 lb & up bass also.

1.1.5" tube with 1/32oz head.
2. 2" BPS Squirmin' Grub on a 1/32 or 1/16oz ball jighead
3. 2" Kalin's Triple Threat grub on a 1/16 to 1/8oz ball or roadrunner jighead.
Even though the BPS and Kalin's are both called 2" baits, the BPS grub is significantly smaller. When the target is specifically gill types, I will often cut the curl tail off the BPS grub so it is just a straight stubby bait to prevent the gills just ripping at the tail and not taking the bait. I would not use the Kalin's grub to specifically target gills, I believe it is a bit too big, but it is exceptional for crappie.
imo a straight tail bait excels at more vertical presentation whereas curl tail baits are superior for a horizontal presentation.
I keep the colors very simple. If I am targetting specifically crappie, I use orange/chartreuse for the tube, white/chartreuse tail for the BPS and Acid Rain (white/yellow/chartreuse tail) on the Kalin's. If I am targetting gills or just kinda messing around and seeing what might want to bite, I will use a natural baitfish color. Something black or black/silver for the tube, black/silver tail for BPS and Tennessee Shad (kinda grey/silver) for the Kalin's. I own way more colors than this but really never use them unless I am desperate.

The most productive for my past two years is the Fish Arrow jig head with a prop and Keitech Easy Shiner

I like a Griddle Bug tied on a jig head of 1/64-1/8th with a smallish hook of 12-8
