Thanks, I was thinking of switching from Gliss line to something else since gliss line is frayed so easily just from my rough finger alone. I might have to give 8lb braid or Nanobraid a try.

Thanks for the info on this Ester mono. Sounds great. I ordered a spool of it.

Got a favor to ask of anyone using this successfuly. Could you show a pic of your spool so I can see where to stop putting it on.

thanks kindly, Chris

One thing I noticed about the 2.4# ester is that it will always break when I try to remove it from the the line keeper on the side of my spinning reel spools. Kind of brittle. That probably means it’s also very finicky about what knots get used and they should be tied carefully.

Another thing I noticed is that the 2.4# ester seems to get down & stay down better with Trout Magnets than 4# Seaguar JDM flouro, despite ester being less dense than flouro. I guess the larger diameter of the 4# flouro is the reason.

After many hours of practicing knots that these old fumbly fingers can tie I settled on the 3 turn surgeons over the 5 turn surgeon's for the very reason you speak. The ester does require the perfect cinching of the knot. With the 5 turn there is more room for error with 2 more loops. I am very satisfied with the 3 turn surgeon's knot after landing some big fish with it.

Does Palomar work well?

I use the palomar to tie my leader to the jig head but the only knots I’ve used with ester is leader knots.....specifically the surgeons knot.

I often tie directly to the lure with the ester (no shock leader) and the palomar knot works well. Just be sure to try and keep the doubled over lines in parallel, avoiding the dreaded crossed lines which weaken the knot.

Thanks for the informative thread on this line, definitely want to try it out. I used straight 4lb mono for years and recently switched to 5lb powerpro+4lb fluoro which is generally a much better feel for me. I either fish deep for redear, shallow for redear or shallow/medium depth for bluegill. Sounds like the ester could work a lot better for the deeper redear fishing with its faster sinking quality. It can be very frustrating trying to get a 1/32 or 1/16oz jigheads+plastic to reach the bottom in 20+ feet while drifting in a float tube with braid main line.

Ester mono has been a game changer for me. It allows me to fish a Trout Magnet down deep and keep it there.....and of course the low ratio reel helps a lot in that also. FC might allow me to do the same but I can no longer see clear line so that was a no go. The ester comes in a lot of hi-vis colors. I may have said earlier but am ready to try a new ester...new to me anyway.....Sunline Night Blue 3.1# test. The KY bass I fish for in July-August are on location now....unfortunately I received a new hip 4 days ago so have to rehab a little bit. Will give a full report on it when I fish it.

Just getting my feet wet with the JDM lines, reels and rods.

Don't get to fish as much as some of you so I don't have much experience in ester lines in the 2lb range. My experience has been with 4lb stren on a cheap Shakespeare rod. I am soaking up as much information as I can from Randy as well as the other people that have found the JDM equipment far ahead of what's available in the US. My first experience with the ester wasn't pleasant. Stripping some off the spool to see if that helps the stuff from continuing to uncoil after the cast.

Nanofil just won't work with my old fingers. It's worse than sewing thread. I was breaking it while trying to tie it on.

Feather the line at the end of the cast with the hand you close the bail and retrieve with and see if that helps.

Ester is very stiff. I think it would be a bad choice for BFS. It just wants to spring off the spool.

I don't know, I think casting reels handle stiff lines better than spinning reels, which is one reason why people prefer braid for spinning. However a true BFS rod, i.e. intended for bass, will likely be far too stiff for any ester line. On a custom casting build using a trout spinning blank I think ester would be awesome.
