Gloomis Classic Trout

Has anyone used the IMX SR782?

I really wish it was offered in GLX.

I used the old IMX 842-2, assuming taper unchanged, not dissimilar although 6" longer. Great rod for spoons, spinners and plugs for straight retrieves. Taper too slow to properly work soft plastics / jigs, doable with braid but not great.

I looked at a GL3 SR 783 and its not available in IMX/GLX but that is what I'm looking for.

I wonder if a SJR 781 IMX is about the same.....anyone???

i used to own the 2 piece IMX SR841-2, a 7 foot two piece UL rod, it was awesome, but i since sold it because I much prefer one piece rods.

I replaced it with a 1 piece TSR loomis rod, the TSR 791 and its awesome. my only regret is not getting the 7'6 version of the same rod.

have you tried any of the TSR rods? they are really good.

Sorry I am of no help on the original trout series. However I will add that the 791 TSR GLX remains as one of my all time favorite sticks (I've typed plenty on it here). I used it for big smallies in our crystal clear rivers that eat peanuts well out of the spook zone. It has tamed my biggest top five river smallmouth, some mistake 20lb carp and some channel cats to 15lbs while smallmouth fishing. I owned 4-5 of the original "microcline" FAML Stradic combos and stupidly sold them off for "better". Matt Straw originally hooked me when he penned an article about that combo in an In Fisherman Bass Guide years ago labeling it as a "Jekyll and Hyde" rod capable of more than just panfish. He was spot on. My wife who catches as many 18"+ smallies as a lot of smallmouth guys in my circle of friends has remained using that combo through the years and has warned me not to replace it. I've missed that stick and am on a revamp to get them married to new Stella's. What comes around...

Sorry to be of zero help sir.

The SJR's are a lot faster with a lot of backbone for bigger fish. I wouldn't consider it an ultralight rod at all. I'd look to the TSR series. The TSR 1 and 2 actions are better suited for trout.

I throw a lot of 3/16-1/4 ounce baits jerkbaits for trout, will the 791 be able to handle that?

I've been using a 842 SJR or Adderemine.

no I dont think so, its a true UL rod with a max lure weight of 3/16.

for 1/4 jerkbaits you may have to go with the SJR series not the SR or TSR series.

if you want something lighter than the SJR842 you could try SJR 781 as you mentioned. it might fit the bill nicely.

I have the SJR700 and its a great rod, althought its on the shorter side (5'10)

good luck in your search

No sir.

Strictly open hook weightless and 1/32 fine wire heads with non salted offerings in my hand. Though it'll chuck a #7 original Rap or 1/8 UL Rapala popper into another zip code on 5lb braid and protect the hooks superbly on brown bass. I've only used the GLX versions in TSR.
