BFS Lure Testing
BFS Lure Testing
The spoons I ordered from AliExpress came in the mail the other day. I also went ahead and pick up some YoZuri and Trout Magnet pin minnows. The TM pins are 1/8 ounce and a little longer than 2". The Yozuri pins are listed as being 2" and 1/16 ounce or 2 grams. I am still awaiting my Ace Hawk CU Double to come in the mail so I am having to use a St. Croix UL along with my Revo SX4 with a BFS spool. This rod has been a blast to use with this reel. I have spooled it with about 65 yards of 8# suffix fluorocarbon as I had it on hand.
Went out today looking to see how these spoons and lures worked. I did not get around to testing the spoons. I really like these pin minnows. I swapped the trebles out for single barbless hooks. The Yozuri's worked great out of the box and did not need to be tuned. The TM where pulling a little to the right so they need to be tuned. The TM also have a wider wobble to them than the yozuri pins. Both of these lures have a larger lip on them than other pin minnow lures I have. This is the main reason I want to give them a try.
I ended up landing 3 bass and missing at least 7 others for the day. I did get one little pig that was pulling drag. He was barely hooked in the corner of the mouth. Was not expecting to catch anything his size so I left the net at home. As soon as he hit the bank the hook came out. I was able to get to him before he flopped back into the pond. All in all I had a good few hours out testing.
A few things I will need to change. I will need to change the size of line I am using. Will go down to 6# fluorocarbon. I did have some 4# mono on this reel but I got a bad backlash and had to cut the line off the spool. The 4# mono also tends to slip between the reel and spool at times when trying to get a backlash out. Have not had that problem with the 8# but my distance with 1/16 ounce lures or lighter suffers. Still able to get around 30' cast with the 8# but want a little more distance.

Re: BFS Lure Testing
Yep, that's what makes bfs so much fun-
even small fish seem big!

Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.
Re: BFS Lure Testing
Well done Spoons are on the short list of baits I need to explore. I really strayed from UL/BFS quite a bit this year as I concentrated on chasing big bass and getting my new canoe dialed in. Threads like this give me the incentive to get back to it.
Re: BFS Lure Testing
Nice catches. How did you work the minnows? Steady retrieve, jerks, twitches? Also what was the typical water depth? I mostly use spoons and jigs so when I tie on a crank I'm never sure what to do.

Yo Zuri Pins Minnow are awesome fish catching all around.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish
Re: BFS Lure Testing
It was a steady retrieve. Although I did try to work them as a jerk bait. Does not take much of a twitch to get these moving. Almost most of my fish hit near the bank. They came from deeper water to hit the lure. One missed the bait twice and followed it. Was about to give up but I stopped the lure and he turned and hit it.
