Polyester line on bfs gear

Post by ss30378 » Tue Aug 04, 2020 3:46 pm

How are the handling qualities of polyester line and any advantage over flouro lines? Would it be a good bfs line?

I have no clue how it will do on BFS gear. The advantage over FC line on spinning gear is...extreme sensitivity....extreme casting distance. The stuff is great for very light lures...1/2 gram. It can be a bear to manage on spinning reels. FC has stretch...ester has zero stretch. Need to use shock leader with ester line.

Since there is no stretch im guessing polyester line stiff as well?

If you try it, don't spool it the morning of your trip. Do it early enough that you have plenty of time to untangle the mother of all bird's nests and respool with another line (any other line).

Ester line has a well earned reputation for manageability issues. As bad as it is with a spinning reel, it is far, far worse with BFS gear. I have tried it once and will never, ever do it again.

If you want no stretch, I would suggest braid.
If you want a line that sinks, I would suggest fluoro.
If you want a line that sinks and has no stretch, I would suggest a spinning reel.

Thanks for the responses guys, looks like I'll stick with what I know on bfs and maybe try some ester line on one of my spinners to check it out. Thanks!

My hypothesis was that ester and BFS don’t play well together but never had the nerve to test it. Glad Chris did the experiment for us.

Agreed ,last thing I want to do is go out with my super cool new JDM line and blow it up on the first cast. Cuss fest for the rest of the day after that...

I use ester a lot but even on spinning gear its stiffness can cause it to launch coils of line off the end of the spool. With practice you learn to manage it.
