Got the new majorcraft 5g blank aji-do ajing rod in today. This is my first ajing rod, and it is definitely much different than any UL rod I’ve used before. I got the 5’ UL model as I wanted a super small stream rod. Much more backbone than even my UL bfs rods but the sensitivity is off the charts. Using my little 1.8g jig and 4lb invizx fluoro I could feel every little nibble on the fall even in windy conditions with the cold front moving in. I hooked a couple dozen sun fish and missed a few more pulling the jig away too quickly.

The bites were electric feeling, even the weeds felt like strikes. It just added a whole bunch of fun to my UL spinning setup. Rod comes in at 1.6oz and the total combo with the soare ci4 500s comes in at 6.65oz with line and jig attached.

At 5’ you won’t get long bomb casts but it is an accurate stick so it should be nice in my small streams for sight fishing. Super cool addition!

Sweet rod, Steve! You should post a pic of the tip. I'm intrigued by the neon guide wraps. Is that for easier visual strike indication?
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Thanks Tim! It will be my weapon of choice for our little river canyon trip so you can try it out. Yeah the neon wraps are for strike detection. I know a lot of aji fishing is done at night so the neon probably makes a difference in the dark with artificial light.

That's even lighter than most ice fishing rods and they only have like just a Tennessee cork handle.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

That looks good!
Should glow if you use the uv light for the ester lines

Nice, are those solid tip? Look like it though. I might have to save some dough for a little longer one. Have you tried any lower weight than 1.8grams?

These are solid tipped, I've gotten a bit more testing in compared to the MC days 6'3" UL SFS rod which is also solid tipped. The ajing rod tip is much more powerful than the days rod and feels a lot like (if not a touch more power) the speedstyle 6'4" bfs solid tipped rod. I've been doing more testing with my lightest trout magnet which weighs in at .8g and my average cast distance is 14-15 yards with the ajing rod and the days will run the same setup (same reel and line) 22-23yds.

The little 5' rod will never be a long distance rod but there is a trifecta of things slowing this rod down. Length, guide spacing and guide size for sure and potentially line diameter. Obviously a 5' rod isn't meant for long bomb casts but compared to the days rod the aji-do stripper guide is nearly 6" closer to the reel than the days. Also the days stripper guide has a 20mm ID while the aji-do is only 11.5mm. I can feel the line running through the guide on the ajing rod but it feels smooth on the days rod. The ajing rod is rated to a max of 2.5lb line so maybe my 4lb line is really choking it off. I'll try a super thin braid or maybe a light ester line and see how much that helps distance.

Hope this rod works well for your purposes but I don't understand why short ajing rods even exist. Just doesn't seem to make sense in the salt water environment, targeting horse mackerel.

Thanks..”feel a lot like speedstyle solid tip”. So it might not worth it for me then. I currently use speedstyle 6’3 solid tip especially for 1/64oz trout magnet when targeting bluegill. My assumption is Ajing rod is a tad softer than bass rod to help when loading light weight lure.

I don’t have the 6’3” speedstyle to compare but the 6’4” light powered bfs solid tip and aji rods are both much more stout than the 6’3” days UL SFS solid tip spinning rod.

Neither the aji-do or speedstyle bfs load particularly well in the blank with the tiny baits but they still cast them out accurately. It’s just that tiny bit of tip movement that gets the little jigs flying predictably.

This aji rod seems to show its value when transmitting vibrations. I don’t know if it’s the taper or the blanks but it’s very lively. Even the most subtle nibbles are alarmingly felt. I think this would be excellent in situations where there’s current drifting small baits through the water column and feeling is diminished.

In a nutshell if you’re looking for a blank that will load a .5g jig and send it max distance then this is not what you’re after. If you’re able to sacrifice casting distance in exchange for feel then you may want to consider something like this. I’m not sure if the longer models have a different guide configuration so the longer ones may have all the boxes checked.

A lot of ajing with single jighead in Japan is done from embankments where one does not need long casts. Short rods allow for greater sensitivity, much needed when a good chunk of line is suspended over the surface – same reason why they like ester lines for those environments. Long-distance ajing is usually done with caro rigs, this is where you'll see long, relatively powerful rods with seemingly delicate solid tips.
