Micro troubles

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

Micro troubles

Post by cjtoad » Sat May 28, 2011 7:45 pm

I love micro guide, but wrapping them really sucks. How are you guys dealing with them? I've been using small slivers of tape to hold them to the blank, there's got to be a better way. Plus trying to deal with them with big hands is difficult at best. Any advice would be a big help, thank's.

I use a tiny drop of super glue to put them where I want them, then wrapping is easy.

I followed the advice of others and started using dental ligatures (very small O rings). I use 2 on each guide and wrapping is very easy. A great solution to an otherwise annoying problem.

Very small cable ties. Cinch them down just tight enough to slip your guide on then tighten up the tag end with needlenose pliers. Straighten them up and wrap. You can get about 6 or 7 wraps of thread on the foot then use a cuticle nipper or side cutter to cut the tie wrap off.

I use automotive grade masking tape, it's tackier than regular painters masking tape, but I cut it into 1/8th to 1/16" slivers and it holds just fine. If you some searching around on other boards, I've heard where folks will start a wrap, slide the foot under a wrap and wrap up the guide far enough that they can slide them back and they will still hold there.

I just do my standard foot prep and a 1/8" strip of painters tape with no issues. I don't use tons of thread tension though

3" cable ties, available from Swampland.

Hot glue to wrap a guide as a tip top.

I've nearly completely switched to size 4 Kigan guides because the foot is long enough to easily use the small zip ties to hold the guide. The zip ties don't work as well for me on the Batsons and Fujis, but the Kigan's foot is just a bit longer. I wrap the size 4s just like I wrap a full size guide.

Lance at Swampland has them. He doesn't list them on the site, but he has them. I got SiCs and Kigan's version of Alconite called Coalite. I also had him special order me some zirconia in silver, gold and blue. If he doesn't have what you want, send me a pm and I can sell you some to try. Not sure what it's worth, but they have the beefiest tips on the market, able to withstand 30 kilos crush weight, lol.
