Look what I found

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

Look what I found

Post by daiwa lunatic » Sun Dec 04, 2011 1:00 pm

don't know if this is still rare, went to my local tackle shop and found this on clearance for $20, don't know if this is cheap, but I like the shape of this reel seat, comes with the cork fore grip and handle, just did not included in the picture.

Probably not many of those around. Lots of guys still prefer that seat.

ahh, the good old days!

A loomis imx8400 was my first foray into a decent rod for bass fishing and it had that reel seat...

Still one of the best! My CR 784 GL3 and MBR 783 IMX both had that seat...AWESOME design IMO.

I was thinking of using this to build a pixy rod, but don't have a pixy reel, although I have a sol, that might be good enough I think

These reel seats have some pretty unique characteristics. Due to the offset, on a casting seat (as shown) it will feel as if the reel sits lower than on a "straight through" handle like a Fuji. Fifteen years ago it seemed there were not as many very small / low profile reels and the larger, especially round reel profiles probably were easier to palm due to this seat design.

I have about 8 rods with this type seat and half are casting rods. I have a Conquest 50 on a Loomis 782 IMX that is a very nice match. The lower profile of the C50 sitting in this reel seat is probably the smallest profile round reel I could imagine.

The other comment about these is they tighten and secure the reel tighter than any other reel seat I have seen. The mechanical advantage of that big threaded metal ring is impressive. So much so it will mark your reel foot much more than other modern reel seats. Put a piece of tape on you reel foot before you mount the reel and you should be fine.

so far that is also the only draw back I've seen on this reel seat, but I'll try to see if i can get a nylon washer that will fit the nut before i put this together.
