Spinning guides and sizes
Just got some guides from Mudwhole.com and the stripper or first guide from the reel is a 25 next is a 16, Is that weird or will it work fine with 6# flouro . I got them on sale and didn't pay close enough attention when I ordered them. The people there said it would be fine and then again Ducket's spinning M.M.'s start with a #16. I assume it is ok, but could always bend a few ears here. Thanks in advance

Re: Spinning guides and sizes
My first guide is typically half the diameter of my reel spool. For 90% of the rods I do, its 25, 16, 10...

Sounds fine to me too. My typical layout is 25, 16, 8.

very good question...dont mean to thread jack but with phenix's new trout rod they used 20,16,12,10, etc. does that make a difference casting-wise? this is a 7-8ft rod....

- For a trout rod you would be using light line, such as 6lb. and down, so you would have smaller guides - what you have sounds good.Real Legg Legend wrote:very good question...dont mean to thread jack but with phenix's new trout rod they used 20,16,12,10, etc. does that make a difference casting-wise? this is a 7-8ft rod....
Re: Spinning guides and sizes
If ever there was a need for a larger stripper it would be when flourocarbon line is used. That said, 6# flouro would probably choke fine through much smaller guides if you want to save some weight on your next build. Just about the only time the new "micro-spinning" craze runs into trouble is when heavier flourocarbon is pulled through small strippers. It's so stiff, but getting better.

Re: Spinning guides and sizes
Thanks fellas, I wasn't sure if I needed a 20 between the 25 and 16. I have built many casting rods, not so many spinning rods. The other guide set I got had it the way stated above thats why I had to ask. Thank you to all who replied.

Re: Spinning guides and sizes
I size my first guide based on the reel spool diameter. I don't care what pound test or what fish you're chasing, that relationship of reel spool to first guide is what I care about. On lighter powered Trout/Panfish rods most people are using smaller reels and a size 20 for my first guide is common.Real Legg Legend wrote:very good question...dont mean to thread jack but with phenix's new trout rod they used 20,16,12,10, etc. does that make a difference casting-wise? this is a 7-8ft rod....
Personally...I feel they're using way too many sizes there. And the first size is probably correct for most people.

Re: Spinning guides and sizes
All of the given setups will work, so I figured I'd chime in with mine.
My typical setup with a Daiwa size 2500 reel and 6# P-Line CXX is 25, 12, 8L (Fuji Y frame) and 5.5 or 5 fly guides to the tip. With other guide types I'll replace the 8L with a 6 fly guide. The 8L or 6 fly is 31-32" from the reel spool.
I've just finished a St. Croix 3C62MXF using Amtak NCRLA 25, 12, NCRLF 6, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, and a micro top with size 4 ring. Test casting with a Daiwa Coastal 2500 reel, 6# P-Line, and a 1/4oz Bass pro Shops casting plug gave a measured average of 41 yards.

Re: Spinning guides and sizes
These are all very helpful answers. The reason it concerned me is a few years back I bought a cheap Johnny Morris 40h and a Carbonlite 7'2" medium and it wouldn't cast light baits with 8# Berkley 100%. You could feel and hear it hit the size 30 stripper and I now know it was the relationship between the wide spool and the .011 dia. stiff line that caused this. 10# P-line Flouroclear sails like braid and the other spool has braid which neither are an issue any longer after switching line. I just needed conformation from you guys before I build this rod. Thanks again fellas.
