Kigan 5G

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

Kigan 5G

Post by Pato54 » Fri Jun 06, 2014 12:40 am

Hi guys,

Just wondering has anyone tried the kigan 5G guides on any builds? If so how have you found them? I haven't seen much published on them at all.

I just got a couple of sets in and they look really good and feel super light. I am going to start wrapping some tomorrow and see how they go.

Cheers

At this point they have not been made available in the US. I have several sample sets but have not had a lot of time to work with them.

That would make sense why there isn't much about them.

Why can't you get them in the US?

I got a BC rod wrapped with them today so once I have got some finish on and given it a go I will post some results.

I think you can order direct from Hydra. Also Swampland carries them.

108642 - I'm the owner of Hydra. We don't have them yet.

As with many things, there are often phased in rollouts. Kigan put a lot of 5G emphasis in Asia to start. We're still waiting on pricing and American English translation for the marketing materials. They are definitely lightweight and offer an original concept in rod guides.

Stay tuned!

Fair enough

Maybe they classify Australia as part of Asia in this case.

Certainly a very cool guide. A set of 12 cast guides came to 1.7 grams total.

When I watched the video, it looked like these guides provide the same performance advances that the microwave guides claim to. I want to see if there is any line stacking that is caused from the flatter side of the guide being against the blank side where the line will ride down to the reel.

Just came across the 5G on youtube. Did a search and this thread popped up.

My thoughts:
1. Microwave guide obviously does tame the line from the butt guide.

2. Kigan's 5G also tames it - but does so by simply starting with a small butt guide.

3. This will also work with any circular guide that is small starting at a butt guide. The line will be tamed right from the butt guide.

However, #1 and #3 are not the same in that #3 will choke the line and give less casting distance with mono/flouro. I am not sure about very flexible braids.

Until someone can test side by side, my guess is that the Kigan would not be much different from the circular small starting guides. I personally do not purchase microwave guides but for my personal use, have constructed them from other titanium SICs - though on a smaller scale for UL applications.

the stripper guides are smaller, but they are also not just round. Looks like they have an oval/ trapezoidal shape.
