Power ratings on new NFC X-Ray blanks?

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

The 732 sounds like it fishes lighter than yours. Definitely wouldn't fish a 3/8 oz jig with it. Tip is very soft, relatively whippy, and can protect light line well. In stock form, it's pretty close to a BFS type of blank - at least right in the middle of that and a power finesse type blank. It fishes lighter than my K2 683ml.. Caught me a little off guard. I actually trimmed 3.5" off the tip. As it is now, I'd estimate somewhere between 250 - 270 grams of power. I'm a bit surprised your blank is so much different, but that's NFC for ya. I probably should have grabbed the 733 instead. I fish various baits between 1/8 and a quarter on it, 7 lb fluoro.
MardukFIN said this about the MB733 on another thread:

I swung it last saturday. It's quite crisp and delicate. RDA is 339g with 281cm WL. Guides wasn't on so i couldn't cast with it.

I haven't used the K2 683ML, but I owned and used a 682L for years and the MB733 is definitely more powerful than the 682L. It's also more powerful than the factory K2 713 spinning, although I felt my 682 had more power than the 713.. I also wouldn't throw 3/8oz jigs with it, the MB733 is too light for that. It was a 3" spark shad behind a 3/8oz jig head with a light wire hook, and I'm dragging or swimming it right off the bottom. I also fish them weightless as well, but in shallow waters.

The 733 with 340g was more so what I was after. I'm happy with my 732 with a tip shave though. My lightest rod in the arsenal.

What are your guys thoughts on rod power being affected by shortening a blank? I have a 736 MB X-Ray and I would like to shorten to 7'1 by removing two inches from the butt of the blank. Is the rod power going to be dramatically reduced by removing two inches? Is the action of the rod going to be that much slower?

Two inches from the butt shouldn't affect the blank much at all.

Since he expressed his purpose as wanting to reduce the length rather than to alter the action, why make this suggestion? :-k

I’m going to keep it at 7’3. I picked up a 853 IMX Pro SJR because I had no idea when the X-Ray blank was going to come and I had a tournament where I needed a MH spinning rod. I’m going to use the rod for heavy tube jigs and as a backup Senko stick.

Started the build tonight by installing the butt cap and finding the spine of the blank. I ended up using an American Tackle G2 carbon butt. The cork was barely large enough for the blank.
