Blank recommendation.

When production rods are not enough, it's time to go custom. Come share your experiences building and/or ordering a custom rod and tell us if you'll ever go back to off the shelf.

Blank recommendation.

Post by a1712 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 9:11 am

I'm looking for a casting blank similar to the loomis 854 in power. I will throw everything on these 3/8-1/2oz. spinnerbaits, jigs, bladed jigs, traps, squarebills, 130 ploppers, texas rigs, swimbaits, burner worms etc.. I had 3- 736mb X-Rays built and I'd like more rod power. Thanks, Brian.

Are you fishing or aimlessly casting around?

Maybe have a look at the Point Blank 701mh. I say it a lot, but I'd recommend PB every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

IDK how much more power you are looking for but, I have a 736 SJ Xray and it seems to have a decent amount of power. More than a Conquest 843c it seems.

Well from a 3/8 oz jig to a 2 3/4 oz whopper plopper is certainly a wide range. I tend to believe that a rod that will handle at the bottom end will probably not do the top end well and vice a versa. I know of no MH that is rated anywhere close to 2 3/4 oz so I tend to think what you want is not available but I wish you well in searching.

I thought he was looking for 3/8 to a half. Didn't think about that big plopper.

Hi. I measure all blanks i build just for fun. Heres some data from me:

NFC MB 736 x-ray power is 540-550g. This is my favourite blank with bottom contact fishing with jigs and plastics.
Next from it in my table is NMB873-MHX with 575g power.
Then NFC MB 709 IM with 621g.
Then comes couple Bushido MagBass blanks. MB73/10-20 693g RDA and Bushido MB68/12-25 721g.
Then very powerful Rainshadow Eternity2 76M (cobalt blue one) with 728g RDA.

IMO 700+ can cast easily 2oz lures with no problems.. Muskyrods! :D

The 7‘ MH Point Blank comes with 630g of power if you haven’t seen my thread about it. The balance is outstanding and therefore if feels very light in hand. I’d also say its taper is a tad faster than the x-ray mb736 from looking at the curves on the rodhouse.fr website.

Power wise it should be quite a step up from the mb736 but I am not 100% sure how it compares to the Loomis 854 powers. I’ve measured the following Loomis rods, maybe this helps with decision making

NRX 802 - 400g
NRX 804 - 625g
NRX 843 - 475g
NRX 873 - 640g
IMX 783 - 545g

I edited my orig. post to change the 190 to a 130 Plopper. Thanks for all the replies and especially the power numbers. Brian.

Quite a few rods will handle that range. I assumed from your original post that you would like a rod around 7'. Often a longer rod will have a wider range of weights but several people listed some very fine blanks that I am sure will suit your needs. Taking into consideration that a 3/8 jig will weight about 1/2 oz with a trailer. So you are really talking about a 1/2 to 1 and 1/2 oz range which is easily doable and I think several of the blanks listed would be great. Always wanted to build on the Bushido blanks but the last several that I have built were NFC blanks and I think they are great.
