Repurposing a Rod with Broken Tip
Repurposing a Rod with Broken Tip
My 733 Kistler Zbone turned into a 723 Zbone-without-a-tip on my last trip out I got a 50% off coupon from Kistler to buy a new one. That still leaves me with a kinda functional broken Zbone (I wasn't asked to saw it in half, and encouraged to keep it for future parts). I'm wondering if I can get a decent rod out of the current one if the guide train is redone and would like some expert opinions.
The easiest fix would be to take off the tip top guide and just adding it to the new, shorter tip (assuming it fits, haven't investigated yet). But my intuition is that I'd want to reconfigure several of the other guides near the tip, as well, to get the correct action out of the rod. I'm also thinking that I don't want to do this myself - I've replaced tip top guides before, but I've never worked with epoxy, and an Xray blank (even a broken one) doesn't sound like a good one to practice on.
Any advice on what to expect from the reconfigured rod? It's a 733 with a quite moderate taper. I'm hoping I get a stouter, probably less (but still plenty) sensitive rod out of it.

Re: Repurposing a Rod with Broken Tip
I would put the old tip back on to the shortened rod first, and see how it performs, before I began moving other guides. You might get lucky, and not have to fool with the guides.
If it doesn't fit, buy a new tip that does fit and try that.

Hmm. I guess I was worried that it would put too much stress on that short section with the two initial guides. Maybe an unfounded concern.mark poulson wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 6:54 pmI would put the old tip back on to the shortened rod first, and see how it performs, before I began moving other guides. Happens a lot to us in shipping. Just a little broken off on the tip. If it's a worthwhile stick, like this one, I just put a new tip on it and fish it.

I'll 3rd the suggestions. Put the tip back on and fish it.

Well, it's not that I didn't believe you or Mark anyway. It's just that I believe Matt even more and definitely don't need any more opinions now

Re: Repurposing a Rod with Broken Tip
I ultimately used my coupon to get a replacement rod, as well. For future reference, this is what both look like. The one with the broken tip still performs well, did a bit of bottom contact on it.
Didn’t do an awesome job on the hot glue, but I’ve had bad experiences with culling it too aggressively before (tip top guide came off again, so I’m opting for the ugly look.
