Point blank suggestions
Point blank suggestions
Well I’m going to build another drop shot rod, cause you can never have too many right??
What’s the best model out of Point Blanks lineup for dropshoting? Will be using it with 3/16 to 1/4 weights and 6” roboworms mainly. Mainly dropping straight down on the fish. Was looking at either the 691 MLXF or the 701 MLF. Which one has the better action between the two and which one is more sensitive?

Re: Point blank suggestions
I just finished building two PB691MLXF blanks a month ago - one as a spinning rod, the other as a casting rod. A year or two ago, I built on the PB701MLF... I feel the PB701MLF is a better micro jig/ned rig rod. I've only fished the PB691MLXF on one trip but it felt good as a drop shot rod. Bite wasn't very good, so I only managed a couple of fish and couldn't get a full feel for the blank yet, but I think it's better suited than the 701 for drop shot applications.

Thanks for the fast response Cal, I wanted to get my order in before all the sales ended. I’m going to go ahead and order the 691MLXF.

Re: Point blank suggestions
I have both. The 6'9 ml is an xtra fast, and the blank is considerably softer throughout the first 3rd of the blank. I personally wouldn't use it with a quarter ounce plus 6" worm. That's going to be right at it's upper limit. Heck, I use mine with 1/8 oz wacky heads and 5 inch worms. The 701mf is going to be a bit too much rod for your intended use. I'd opt for the 701mlf myself. It's right between the two in terms of power, and the fast taper is going to be better for drop shots, especially in deeper water.
Re: Point blank suggestions
Well I ended up ordering the 691MLXF. Honestly I just wanted to build one and see what all the hype is about. I’m sure if I like it I will end up building on the 701MLF too. Thanks for the feedback
Re: Point blank suggestions
I know I'm a bit late, but here are my measurements of both blanks.
Looks exactly how they feel to me: almost identical. Love them both.

Re: Point blank suggestions
The 6'9 ml - the 7ft medium is going to be too much rod. The 6'9 may even over power the presentation a bit, but doable.
Re: Point blank suggestions
I have both and they feel identical to me. When measuring, the 6’9 is just a hair more powerful. Not noticeable on the weather tho.
There’s also close to no difference between „XF“ and „F“ the curve under load is pretty much the same.
It’s really just your preference in length.
To me they’re identical blanks, ones just a bit longer.

Re: Point blank suggestions
I'll have to agree to disagree on this one. The 6'9 definitely has less power throughout, doesn't shut off as quickly, and loads up better with lighter baits, due to the softer upper 3rd of the blank. Tapers are noticeably different as well. Of course, I'm referring to time on the water, not measurements.dennis_rf wrote: ↑Tue Aug 02, 2022 11:36 pmI have both and they feel identical to me. As for Ned rigs, I can load and cast 1/8 oz plus small plastic with greater efficiency and better distance on the 6'9. The 7 footer can cast and handle larger baits more effectively, without feeling taxed as the 6'9 can.
Re: Point blank suggestions

If you can swing it, the Phenix K2 683ml will fit the bill nicely.
