Is the Revo MGX the New Lightweight King?
Introduction: Recently on both our discussion forum and Facebook fan page, we published a list of reels in line for a review and asked readers to vote on which reels they'd like to see written up first. Similar to the stir created at ICAST 2011, the winner was a little unexpected - at least to us. Abu Garcia's Revo MGX won both polls running away so here now is our detailed look into the new magnesium baitcaster from Abu.

The manufacturer lists the drag as 12lb. Did you find a discrepancy? Thanks ...
Re: Is the Revo MGX the New Lightweight King?
heys nice review Cal! ^^
(no offense) but I thought you were very kind and generous to rate the MGX so highly despite your hiccup with it on the Amazon..
I really enjoyed reading your review.

As stated in the review, we tested it at 5Johnny A wrote:The manufacturer lists the drag as 12lb. Did you find a discrepancy? Thanks ...
We were using the reel outside its intended application. It would not be fair to deduct points because it didn't hold up to that abuse.haoz wrote:(no offense) but I thought you were very kind and generous to rate the MGX so highly despite your hiccup with it on the Amazon..
As stated in the review, we did not compare it against the Aldebaran or any of the Core variants.fishsmart wrote:have you tried this reel against the Core 50?

Re: Is the Revo MGX the New Lightweight King?
I DO find it interesting that.....
1. Abu has lived off the 18-24lbs of drag in their marketing....
2. Many Revo users assumed the MGX drag was 18+lbs. before they read the specs, if they ever did.
3. The MGX specs at 12lbs.
4. The reel actually tested at 5lbs.
So...What will happen..
Will Revo believers shy away from the reel? Will they say 5lbs. isn't accurate? Will they realize a true 18-24 lbs. of drag force is the most unnecessary thing in fishing?
I am curious....

I knew it was 12 lbs. You can put me in the "isn't accurate" category. I'll be checking the drag to confirm one way or the other and report back.steve1206 wrote:I DO find it interesting that.....

I understand that it was pushed past its limits in the amazon but when u said the screw backed out and the brakes broke I was kind of turned off by the reel. I have a quantum reel you buy as a set from basspro and pushed that reel way past its limits and it held up very well. Do you think the review also revealed indications of long term durability of the mgx? I still would like try this reel

5lbs ISNT accurate like their testing on the Pixy R drag came up short as well if im not mistaken..

Yea its not fair that the side plate fell off and broke pins..
Agree with that as the "intended" use is what most people wont be using the reel for..
My Pixys "intended" use is for finesse, but I pitch the hell out of it with 20lb flouro and have thrown Bull shads on My silver one.. My side plate hasnt fallen off and things braking inside..
my Type R makes a very nice froggin reel with 50lb braid..
