Introduction: Oh how time flies when you are fishing. It has been six seasons ago since we first news of a new casting reel that was about to REVO-lutionize the low profile market. It is no secret that these reels have found great success from both the media and anglers. These reels have been such a success that they effectively put Abu Garcia in the spotlight for more than just their popular conventional round reels. Looking to build on that solid foundation Abu Garcia is poised to re-REVOlutionize the market yet again with newly redesigned Revo casting reels which will be available Fall 2012.

Interested to hear more about the new spool weight, and how exactly wider spool improves casting? I thought it would be opposite: wider line angles = more line friction=poor casting performance...

I agree that friction increases with wider angles (thus the T3). The potentially offsetting advantage of a wider spool is that the diameter of coils of line on the spool decreases more slowly on the cast on a wider spool than on a narrower one, so with each rotation of the spool, more line shoots forward. It seems to me that a wider-spool reel should have the line guide set further away from the spool (assuming the typical low-profile-reel fixed-position-during-the-cast line guide), but with the intense focus on lowering reel weights, this is unlikely to be part of the engineering.

Yes, that crossed my mind but didn’t think that wider spool would have more pros than cons…interesting.
I remember reading here (from ROG if I am not mistaken) about some old reel (ABU?) which had line guide completely flipped up and away from line during the cast. To this day that seems the most logical design and not sure why nobody tried to reintroduce same concept .

At that pricing, looks like the Premier just got priced out of usefullness. I think most would pay a little more for an MGX, or just be perfectly happy with the STX, which looks to be the same reel as the old premier.

The STX would be the reel I'd purchase out of the new introductions.

Agreed. Unless you're a huge fan of the IVCB(I'm not) & looking for a saltwater safe reel, I'm not seeing the appeal of the Premier at $300 when the MGX is that close in price & the STX is $100 lower. The weight difference between the 3 is minimal, as is the performance I'm betting.

Lookswise, I actually like the Premier best, but I know the gold highlights bothers a lot of people, but I've hated the Raiders all my life & the silver/black of the STX doesn't do much for me(I wish they'd kept the bronze/copper/whatever you call it highlights from the previous version) & I'm not a huge fan of the all black reels like the MGX. STX will be my reel of choice from here on out(light, dual brakes, super high speed gear ratio), although I'm hoping to pick up a Premier or two before they dry up.

Funny, that's exactly I how feel about daiwa & shimano's current lineup. Shimano went the budget route, trying to be the McDonald's of freshwater baitcasters and every reel in daiwa lineup (with the exception of $500+ reels lol) is a snooze fest that's left me shaking my head.
I think this is a strong lineup from Abu. The drag system alone flat out punks anything in the shimano's/diawa lineup, and now with the weight reductions...yeah, I think abu's in a good position steal some thunder from the big 2, and rightly so. Throw in all the after market jdm parts now available for Abu and I see them as a very viable alternative.
Admit it- If that good lookin' inshore reel, with that drag, line capacity, weight, color scheme & price had a DAIWA logo(and no grooves ) you'd be ecstatic. That reel is smokin hot, and I can only imagine how good it looks on a Dobyns

20lbs of grag is overkill for black bass...so that really does me no good. Revo's are good reels. I just find these "upgrades" to be a bit boring. Yeah - weight reduction is good, but was there anything else that Pure Fishing did to be innovative? Not really. These are much needed upgrades to a stalwart line...but not very exciting.

I felt the same way about the Zillion Type R. Nice upgrades...but we've seen it before.

Besides, the BPS Carbonlite is the same weight and design as the new Premier (sans braking system and a few less lbs on the drag)...for a lot less.
