Introduction: The square-bill crankbait should be a staple in the tackle box of every bass angler. It's just about guaranteed a square bill will produce some solid results at certain times, regardless of water clarity or available cover. Growing up years ago in California, the Luhr Jensen Speed Trap used to be (and still is) a favorite pick of many Delta anglers. Square bills have come a long way since then, and now you'll find many different configurations and colors available from a variety of manufacturers. Based in Italy, Molix has refined the square bill with their exciting new SB Crank 55 Silent model. Will this new bait from the land of exotic sports cars prove to be something special?

Great review of a unique lure.That red craw looks great.Quality stock hooks and tough paint is definately a plus. As my username suggests, Im always on the lookout for new/unique cranks and the body shape is different for sure. Might want to change the depth rating though unless it does run down to 13ft.Ill be trying one soon.

I've been meaning to get around to this review and something keeps sticking in my mind. The reviewer marked down the bait for not being "a real versatile bait".

Can any bait be considered truly versatile? Is a Roman Made swimbait versatile? Is a hollow-body frog versatile? Very few baits are truly versatile; maybe the good ol' plastic worm gets the closest but most lures are application specific: frogs. creature baits, swimbaits, deep crankbaits etc etc.

But maybe I have it wrong and the reviewer doesn't consider it versatile because it doesn't rattle. Would it have been marked down if it had a rattle and then wasn't versatile enough to use in clear water? Many jigs don't rattle, similarly spinnerbaits, worms, frogs but they're awesome dingy water baits.

I think this lure could have scored a touch higher!

Like all TT reviews, readers are bound to disagree with some of what we say. I (the reviewer) don't consider a silent square bill crank that versatile. How many ways can you rig it? Can you fish it deep? Those are just a couple of the factors I consider. I appreciate your input but I still do hold firm with my scoring.

How many different ways can you rig a hard swimbait? How deep can you fish a hollow-body frog?

You won't find a motor enthusiast marking a Ferrari 458 down for not being able to complete the Baja 1000 or a Ford F150 for not getting around the Nurburgring in under 8 minutes. Horses for courses.

I think I'll stop now. I get far too invested sometimes.

I was not offended...again...it's your view and I respect it. One big reason for the low rating is the fact the bait can only be fished in a very small, set depth range--not a very versatile aspect. It would be pointless and unreasonable to give every bait an 8 or a 9

I don't think the reviewer called a hard swimbait or hollow body frog versatile, so your logic fails.

There are plenty of more versatile hard baits, including other cranks and squarebills. The FX Knuckle has an adjustable bill. Bomber makes a crank with a rattle that turns on and off as desired. A lipless crank scan be fished at different depths with different retrieves (burned, yo-yo, vertically jigged, ripped, etc...). I think the reviewer has a point in the bait being of average versatility.

Many have tried. Most have failed.
