Introduction: There is perhaps a no more iconic fishing reel than the spincast. You should click/hold the button prior to starting your swing then let go of the button at end of swing like you would let go of the spool on bc. You dont push/let go at release.

I put 10# braid on my 33 and distance with 1/2oz lipless crank is impressive.

See? i still can't get it! .... i'll get that corrected, thanks. And yes, they can really cast well once you get the mechanics down.

A spincast reel has been the best starting reel for kids, as it is the most trouble-free.

I would never start a novice fisherman out with a spinning reel, as there are too many things that can go wrong: line loops around the line roller/bail arm, big snarls that spring off because of a line loop trapped on the spool lip, line slipping behind the spool skirt and getting wound around the shaft. A pretty sure prescription of killing the love of fishing in newbies at an age when patience in untangling things is rarely a virtue.

SV spool control of Daiwa baitcasters might make them good starter reels for casting medium-size freshwater lures, if the child is responsible enough to be trusted not to drop it, step on it, dip it in the water, and so on.

If I have friends go fishing with me and they aren't very adept at casting, they get the SV reels.

If a good realiable spincasting reel was made, they might be easier to recommend.

The underspin style reels solve most of the problems (aside from line capacity, build quality, and refinement of course) highlighted in the review.

Enjoyed reading this review. The process of learning to cast was very similar to my 6 year old grandson. I have about a dozen of the 33 combos at the dock for visitors to bream fish. Have had guite a few guest catch decent bass on them fishing Pop R's. They cast 1/4 oz. Pop R's quite well.

The review for the Zebco 33 has a math error one of the rating sections - it should be 13 out of 20, not 16 out of 20.
