On a Monster Mission: Fishing for Giant Snakehead



Introduction: Like many other anglers I have a number of fish on my bucket-list. Some are easy guesses like the beautiful Amazon Peacock Bass (check), or drag destroying Goliath Grouper (also check), but others are a little more obscure like the enigmatic Giant Snakehead. I finally had the chance to pursue this species on my recent media trip to South Florida, where I had the opportunity to fish with the authority on Snakes in the region, the current IFGA record holder for Giant Snakeheads, Corey Nowakowski.

Those arent Giant Snakeheads, they are Bullseye Snakeheads. 2 totally different fish. Otherwise, good job. We have some incredible species of fish down here that will blow your mind.

How are they different to a bowfin? I caught a lot of bowfin in South Georgia, my PB so far is ~7lb.

Body shapes are similar, but the fins are different. Most notable is the location of the pelvic fin. On a bowfin, the pelvic fin is near the belly. On a snakehead, the pelvic fin is in a more typical location just under the pectorals. Also snakeheads have an elongated anal fin.

Bowfin are native to the south. Snakeheads are from Africa and Asia and considered an invasive species in North America.
